Despite the unfortunate absence of Solji, the rest of EXID have produced a mini-album that represents a major step forward for the band. Every song is different and each one in its own way surprising and exciting. The differences between the individual voices of each of the members are used to great effect here. This is, not only, because of the 2 very good solo tracks on the mini-album, which feature Hani (Milk) and LE (Velvet) respectively, but also, because of the room given to each of the members to excel in their parts on the other songs, especially on Boy and Night Rather Than Day. Those distinctive voices also harmonise together exceptionally well - the chorus of Night Rather Than Day being a perfect example. Night Rather Than Day with its funk and jazz influences is the obvious single, but each track is easily capable of being a favourite. Sometimes, I favour Hani's mellifluous vocals on the ballad Milk; at other times, LE's sensual rendition of her song Velvet, which manages somehow to be both rapping and singing; and, at yet other times, I want most to hear the individual parts building up to the electronic chorus and the wonderful harmonies towards the end of the song on Boy. How Why is probably my least favourite track, but I am still fascinated and enthused by the way it incorporates and uses changes of rhythm. The overwhelming impression is that EXID have discovered their own especially distinctive voice here. Much of the credit must go to LE who had a hand in the writing of 4 of the 5 songs. However, its also a credit to the label that the group has been allowed to experiment and to defy both convention and fan expectation. My only complaint with the record would be that its only a mini-album of 5 songs. Hearing them leaves me awaiting their next album with great expectation.
