Will not play US-store-bought DVDs on Linux
The drive was easy to install into my Linux desktop and I have used it to play CDs without problems. I can play my own previously-burned DVDs, but this OSGear drive will not play store-bought DVDs. I can play these same DVDs via an external (USB) cd/dvd player (two different ones), but they will not play at all with this OSGear drive although I can see that it is detecting them. I'm not sure why that is, but since that's not my primary intended use-case I haven't investigated further. --- Follow-up: After I investigated and installed the "regionset" package, I was able to discover that the drive came pre-configured for Region 2. Once I changed that to Region 1, I was able to play a US DVD.

Needed double-reboot. (Win 10)
For 22 dollars this is a great replacement for my Windows 10 HP laptop (Envy). To install: I powered OFF, removed battery, installed drive, put battery back in, plugged back in, then powered up, but the device did not show up. I then put in a music CD, but still nothing happened. I even used 'Device Manager' to scan for new equipment, but that didn't find any new device or help me in any way. Finally, I rebooted laptop a second time, and now the device shows up properly, and works perfectly! For some reason I needed TWO reboots. Everything is fine now. Very happy!

Broke after 1 week.
This drive lasted about 1 week before it stopped working. I recommend staying away from it. I bought a different drive (spending more $$) after i returned this on. I lasted about 3 weeks before it broke and i returned it. I spent even more money on a 3rd drive, this one being a name brand (fingers crossed).

Installs (sorta) in HP Pavilion TP01-2137c Desktop
HP says there is no option for a CD drive in the new Pavilion TP01-2137c.....this 9.5mm drive fits in the chassis, and the little metal tabs in the chassis sort of hold the drive in place....note that the actual HP drive is supposed to have a plastic side piece that locks the drive into the chassis, which this drive does not have, but, again, the metal friction tabs in the chassis sort of do the trick. The cables necessary to connect the drive are in place inside the HP TP01-2137c, and Windows 11 recognized that the drive is there. The mechanism that opens the drive is a bit weak, and you may have to help it open and close, but really, how often do you need to put a CD in the drive? Also, the front panel of the drive is just a tad smaller than the opening in the front panel of the HP....meh, I don't care.

Purchased Used, Repair By Buyer Required
Purchased as a used-like new DVD-RW device from Amazon, the drive arrived bent and not able to eject the disc tray. An hour's careful bending of the very flimsy sheet metal typical of these 9.5 mm thick drives, adjustment of the ejection latch, and repeated installation - removal from a desktop tower, yielded a unit both physically and electrically "up to snuff". The drive plays back and records as expected. This drive arrived with the front bezel left retaining tang (plastic) broken off, and the right tang bent through failure. The front bezel flopped free during first installation of the drive. The bezel is now super-glued in place, AFTER the required sheet metal and ejection latch repair. This CD / DVD-RW unit is identified by Windows 10 Device Manager (from the drive firmware) as HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GU70N, a Hitachi-LG Data Storage device. The name "OSGEAR appears nowhere except on the wholly inadequate zip-lock bag in which the drive was packed, and in Amazon's advertising. All-in-all, a perfectly usable DVD-RW drive for a pittance in cost, but requiring judicious repair by the buyer to be made usable.

Excellent Product
Perfect fit for my new Dell Inspiron 3020S Small Form computer. Simple plug and play install with no drivers or software needed. The Dell has the required cables with proper connecters pre installed, just attach and close the case.
