If you’re a sobber, this is the book for you. It took me over an hour to be able to stop myself. Let me rewind just a bit. Sukegawa brings together an unlikely friend group, the majority of which was a bit unlikable to me due to how they initially treated Tokue, the old lady. The way Sukegawa conjures Tokue immediately makes you feel so much warmth towards her, and the book hinges a bit on that sentimentality. But boy, if it’s gotten you going in the sentimentality department, you’re done for. You won’t recover from just how emotional Sweet Bean Paste is. It may look like a feel-good novel, but oh no, this will rip your heart right out of your chest. So yeah, happy reading!
