It's hard to think that it has been seventeen years since this album was released, and eighteen years since this nervous beauty stepped onto the stage in San Remo to belt out the story of Marco and her trials coping with his departure and to think that she didn't have a clue that she'd eventually become the most famous Italian songstress the world has ever known. <IT'S BEEN 30 YEARS as of 2024 for this album and 31 for Laura's debut!> This 1994 album, "Laura", contains the remarkable song, "Strani Amori" (Strange Loves). If you haven't seen the video, look it up on either YouTube <45m views 01/2024> .There is a b/w version, and a color version <Colorized version was removed about 2018/9>. Though not a high tech production, you will appreciate this song even more. In fact, the video is shot in a very creative way, for the small budget on hand, ending with a beautiful video protraiture of a smiling, barely 20 yr old Laura. The song is melodramatic, colorful, and even has a true choral accompaniment, which was a popular trend in the early 90's, especially in the U.S. Laura's interpretation of this song is unmatched to this date. In fact, because her voice has changed over nearly two decades, especially in regards to pitch and power, this 1994 version is most likely the best rendition ever sung, live or recorded other than Renato Russo, an excellent male version. "Amori Infiniti" is a song that has many a time been overlooked. Perhaps many first-time listeners judge it by its first ten seconds, as it starts out as what would sound like a corny or cheesy song, and then skip to the next track. But when further listened to, "Amori Infiniti" becomes a deep, emotional, and higher quality ballad. There is a transition in the structure of the song that is repeated at least three times. While most songs today simply repeat a chorus line by shifting up one half to one key for intensity, this song employs a unique transitional technique found in classic standards. An unpopular song would seem to be "Anni Miei" ("My Years"), certainly a significant departure from the mood of the album. However, it was meant to be a teen song, about a girls desire to 'bust out' of her shell and take on the world and find that doing it her way lends to her satisfaction. For an album entitled, "Laura", this song is certainly appropriate, as since this was in her very early years, or months for that matter, she certainly fulfilled it. The 'childish' voice matched the flavor of the lyrics as well. Whether this was unintended, only she and her production crew at the time knew. What is too bad is that no official video for it exists. It would be fun to see how a video would be matched to this song to highlight a humorous side to the Laura we have become used to. <Please be aware that when accessing Amazon Music Unlimited, you can find many of Laura's albums including the first two originals, but not all the songs mentioned here are included in the watered down Amazon bundle, certainly not unlimited as claimed. You will have to purchase the albums physically.> In the last two albums, a pair of songs were weak, and tended to resurrect the grungy, rocky style of American music of the late 80's. These could have been dropped, and one does appear in this album, and I will let you figure which one. But in the early 1990's, with great influence from 80's music, this is how a producer would think overseas, where trends and styles are up to three years in arrears. Laura does not sing like this anymore. <It becomes more and more evident as the years go by she may have lost that belting ability.> Today, and for at least the last twenty-one years, she has pursued another direction, highlighting other singing abilities. The first two albums highlight what some have called, 'the Real Laura', the Laura Pausini with unmatchable Italian Heart & Soul. The album "Laura", when looking back nearly twenty years ago <over 30 now>, is certainly a very great album. The first album introduced a great singer, and this second album guaranteed to her and the world a lifetime of success. And to think, back in 1993, when she walked on that stage at San Remo and faced a televison audience, as far as what was to be, she didn't have a clue.
