reasonable read
as someone who lives in chronic pain daily without a free day..................ok well I get maybe 1 day a month where I begin to wonder if I might be getting better then I wake up the next day and oooh okay just one free day where most rational thought was within my grasp..........I have some insight into pain, I live in it and this book was helpful in broadening my perspective and understanding the opinions and what seem to be somewhat successful methods of treatment, and I must say some have found coping skills to help with this debilitating way of life. hey if you live in constant or even frequent pain this book sure wont do you any harm. why don't you pick one up and see. I mean after all, there is not much out there regarding treatment methods or people who can help. most only hinder efforts and cause more stress adding to our already difficult path on which we must needs walk.

Sound, accessible, optimistic, holistic medical advice on recovery from Chronic Pain
Chronic pain, a condition that millions of Americans suffer from, is different and more complex than acute pain. Mel Pohl, MD, speaks nonjudgmentally, with depth, scientific expertise, and wisdom about the causes and treatment approaches to chronic pain. The physical and neurological mechanisms of pain perception are interwoven with the emotional, behavioral, familial, and existential dimensions of the chronic pain syndrome. The text is kept lively by the author's clear writing style as well as three extended case histories that illustrate the lives of typical Americans struggling with chronic pain of different physical causes. Acute pain activates specific pathways in the brain. Chronic pain recruits nearby pathways associated with brain areas for emotions, memory, reward, and fear. There is no such thing as pain by itself, but pain is always accompanied by some degree of fear, anger, isolation, and changes in the sufferer's view of himself and his future. Dr. Pohl, a medical doctor specializing in pain and addiction, outlines a multidimensional approach to deal with the many dimensions of chronic pain syndrome. Addiction, which begins innocuously enough as a simple search for relief from life's pain and suffering, is an exceedingly common complication of chronic pain. Dr. Pohl provides a thorough and non-judgmental description of the interaction between chronic pain and the addictive process, and how to recover from it. In the treatment section of the book, the merits of a wide variety of treatment modalities are discussed, including (but not limited to) exercise, nutrition, meditation, yoga, physical therapy, acupuncture, Reiki, EMDR, and 12-step recovery programs. As noted in the book's forward, "When chronic pain strikes, treatment must be aimed at biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of the individual." (p. xiii) "A Day Without Pain" provides sound, accessible, optimistic medical advice for chronic pain sufferers, especially those whose condition is complicated by the risk of addiction to opiate pain medications. This book is a wonderful, wise, scientifically sound guide to relief from chronic pain and the diminished lifestyle it entails. It addresses a major problem in western society. For those who suffer from chronic pain and for their family members - who also suffer - this is a very practical guidebook to recovery, written by an experienced, compassionate, board-certified expert in the field.

As a chronic pain sufferer for over 25 years, I found the book's full and complete exploration of pain excellent. So much hope and great suggestions to take control of your pain versus relying on endless rounds of pain medications.
