Stock firmware was OK and it worked well enough. I flashed it with Rockbox and it's incredible how fast and responsive it is now. The Screen is a little small but its still a great DAP. Much simpler and faster than the HiBy R4, which has more features but is also bigger, heavier, and much more expensive. Drives my IEMs no problem and the sound quality is solid. Compared to the SnowSky Echo Mini which is just a bit cheaper, this is much better. Can handle more songs, does a better job with navigation, and is just all around better. Bluetooth was OK under the stock firmware but flashing Rockbox loses that feature.

The HiFi Walker H2 is a solid little media player for OGG, MP3, and FLAC files. It’s easy to use, and the physical buttons give it a tactile feel that modern phones just don’t have anymore. The stock firmware is perfectly functional—if all you need is simple playback, you can use it as-is and never feel like you’re missing out. Navigation is straightforward, and everything works reliably. That said, where this device really shines is when you install Rockbox, the open-source firmware. Rockbox unlocks a ton of extra features, including: - Parametric EQ and advanced equalization controls. - Time stretching (change playback speed without altering pitch). - Video playback and broader format support. - A more customizable user experience overall. Rockbox doesn’t actually replace the default firmware—it sets up a dual-boot system. By default, it loads into Rockbox, but you can easily boot back into the stock OS if needed (for example, to use Bluetooth, since Rockbox currently doesn’t support it). My only real complaint is that the device doesn’t come with a protective case. The only option I found was a faux-leather case for around $25, which feels wildly overpriced for something that should cost a fraction of that. ✅ Bottom line: The H2 is a good player out of the box, but with Rockbox it becomes a great one. If you just want simple playback, the stock firmware is fine. But if you want more control and flexibility, Rockbox makes this player really shine.
