I love just about everything Mary Kate McDevitt does and this book is no exception. It is adorable and beautifully illustrated and whimsical. I love her lessons and it’s already helped me start building my illustration portfolio and develop my skills. Highly recommend.

I have to disagree with previous reviewers complaining about the format and content of this book. It’s excellent, and offers plenty of exercises and ideas to make up for the “blank pages” criticism. I especially like the format of the assignments, which is a real-world brief, with prompts for brainstorming—almost like having a live session with the art director. The sketching exercises are fresh and fun, and the book is well-written and handsomely designed. Great stuff!

This book is filled with fun challenges and excellent practice assignments to help you learn to illustrate.

I preordered this book and now that it’s arrived, I’m kinda disappointed. More than half the pages in the book are blank! Meant for practice or whatever, but dang. If you make art, it’s more likely than not that you already have a sketchbook, right? I was hoping for more content, not a bunch of blank practice pages. There’s some good stuff in here, but you’re better off just getting it from the library.

i am a big fan of mary kate mcdevitt and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of this book— unfortunately, over 100 pages are left blank for sketching— sorry to say, there just isn’t much to the book— i would not have purchased this book if i had a chance to see it before ordering—

Recommend for accomplished sketchers and doodlers. Cons: This book isn’t suitable for those still seeking their illustration style. If you don’t have the ability to draw well prior to buying this, it’s a huge waste of time. Pros: That said, I like the author’s sketches and feel like this would be useful for someone who just wants to be told what to draw (and doesn’t mind if those things are a bit silly).
