Great Temporary Fix for a Hole I’m Not Ready to Let Go Of
I have a 6-7” “round” hole in my basement ceiling that the previous owner was nice enough to leave so I could check to make sure my water pipes were still there. The pipes haven’t disappointed me and disappeared yet so I figure it should be safe for me to cover the hole. But I can’t commit to permanently covering the hole because I have trust issues and want to ensure the pipes haven’t left me like my 9th-grade girlfriend, so this cover seemed to be perfect for my needs. Seems durable because I dropped it twice while trying to install it. Was very easy to install-once I did get it situated correctly in the hole, it tightened up nicely and didn’t leave any gap between the cover and the drywall ceiling, but also seemed to be just thick enough to be rigid but not so thick that it stands out against the ceiling. And while part of me thinks that $15 is a little steep for a piece of plastic and a steel spring, I really can’t put a price on the emotional security of seeing those sleek shafts of copper whenever the loneliness hits.

'Caviat Emptor' on covering a 6" hole
I bought these to cover 5 flood lamp openings in a loft space ceiling in our Cape Cod home. Years ago some yahoo went through all the work of creating living space, but didn't think to insulate around each flood light fixture. Literally, you could look into the crawl space open to the outdoors when you unscrewed a light bulb. Instead of ripping out the ceiling and adding insulating cones over each fixture, the saner, cheaper option was to forsake the lights and cover over the openings. Seriously, a ridiculous lighting setup in our particular case. After disconnecting power to the lights, I filled the fixture cavities with mineral rock insulation--I have a LARGE aversion to using fiberglass. How did these work? Well enough, but not as well as I expected. Here are the cons and pros-- Pros: - Easy assembly - Blends in well with a ceiling. You don't notice them. - Inexpensive fix. Cons: - While they are advertised to work with a 6" minimum size opening, at this dimension the spring gets in the way of two opposing gripping tabs when inserting. The gripping parts struggle to fully insert into a hole of this size. Several times the spring detached on a cover while installing, and they flew out of my hands. - Had to apply a "generous" amount of double-sided foam picture hanging tape to the undersides to keep them up against the ceiling. One still doesn't fully seat and another separates a little bit on one side, even after numerous re-seatings. I may have to graduate these two to heavy duty tape, which might only succeed in pealing off the paint. - Pivot/attachment points for the spring are weak--one busted after the whole thing flew out of my hands. The moveable sprung gripper doesn't slide well in its track without some light lubrication, and at the minimum 6" diameter setting it actually is partially out of the track--hence the reason the spring will pop out and the unit explodes out of your hands. This is a product that does what it is designed to do, but I feel it it struggles to work with a standard 6" ceiling floodlight opening, which is pretty much a standard for indoor home lighting. The plastic is a little on the weak side, breakage at the spring retention points is possible when installing. The spring gets in its own way when working with a 6" hole, too. Unfortunately, the track that the movable gripper slides in doesn't extend inward far enough to keep the gripper fully seated at this minimum sizing. I'm sure with a larger hole this cover works well, eliminating most of the concerns I have with the product. Would I buy more if needed? Definitely. Do I recommend the product? Yes, but 'Caveat Emptor' if one is buying this to cover a 6" hole.

Covered hole in ceiling left by the plumber!
Did the job covering a 6x8" hole the plumber made in our condo ceiling to look for leaks. Decided not to patch the ceiling in case there was ever a leak from above again. This panel fit right in the square and I was able to paint it the color of the ceiling to blend in.
