Tea For Two (DVD) [1950]

Doris and Gordon share the Screen
'Tea for Two' was the first of three films that Doris Day and Gordon MacCrae made together in the early fifties. Pure corn, to be enjoyed if you like tunes by Vinvent Youmans and his contemporaries as well as easy-going choreography danced by the whole chorus. Day and MacCrae sing sweetly but they by no means hog the film. Patrice Wymore dances a storm whilst Gene Nelson reminds one of a young Fred Astaire. He has a couple of dancing duets with Doris, whose talent here was never fully developed. There is also Eve Arden, good but occasionally over the top with her sardonic wit .However the film suffers from a double dose of blight. S.Z. Sakall is the chubby darling who murders the president's English and Billy de Wolfe is the oafish producer of the show. He does a frantic dance, falls twice into the pool, swings off a ladder into a tree, contorts his face and generally disrespects everyone. Very funny...not.

A sparkling evenings entertainment
Brilliant film. Doris Day sparkles throughout. Dialogue witty, songs great, dancing spectacular. Cast superb. The only downside on my particular dvd is that it is out of sync a bit. Its not too bad until you get a closeup when the singing starts but even with this dont let it put you off and it could just be my copy. The partnership of doris day and gordon macrae is excellent. The other two films with these two stars in that i recommend is On Moonlight Bay and the sequel By the light of the Silvery Moon. I have had all these films previously on VHS videos for the last 30 years and have watched them all over and over again throughout the years and have never tired of them. That's how good they are. Hope this review helps you make up your mind to purchase and if you do hope it gives you as much pleasure as it has me. Enjoy!!

DD is great
A must for all Doris Day fans. But having seen Gordon Macrea in Carousel and Oklahoma I wonder, in this film is his voice dubbed? It just doesn't sound the same as in the other films....... Based on the hit show No No Nannette the plot explains the title - DD isn't allowed to say Yes to any questions she is asked for 24 hours as a bet to prove to her uncle she can do so in order for him to give her money to put on the play. Which then scuppers her chances when Gordon Macrea asks her to marry him! Yes or No?? Great tunes. Loved the film.

Tea for two.....a very palatable experience!
Superb entertainment...what a natural Doris Day was on film and such a pity she did not play more seriously dramatic roles. Here she just radiates while Gordon Macrae croons charmingly, Gene Nelson displays his fantastic dancing skills and Eve Arden wise cracks to great effect. Highly recommended

tea for few
this is a very weak cuppa indeed tho'the music is good and so is eve arden. The (inane) story is loosely based on no no nanette.Doris Day has her usual "jolly hockey sticks" grin on her face through out (I felt I wanted to give her a slap!)the big dance routines are all over the place and a complete mess, and I had to keep adjusting the volume up.Like I said the songs are good (well their all standards that have stood the test of time)but I'm afraid the whole movie is one big stale tea bag
