Product Description Ben Affleck follows his acclaimed Gone Baby Gone directorial debut by directing, co-writing and starring in a taut thriller about robbers and cops, friendship and betrayal, love and hope and escaping a past that has no future. He plays Doug MacRay, leader of a Boston bank robber gang but not cut from the same cloth as his fellow thieves. When Doug falls into a passionate romance with the bank manager (Rebecca Hall) briefly taken hostage in their last heist, he wants out of this life and out of the town. As the Feds close in and the crew questions his loyalty, he has one of two choices: betray his friends or lose the woman he loves. Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively, Titus Welliver, Pete Postlethwaite and Chris Cooper also star. desertcart.co.uk Review Ben Affleck worked triple-time on The Town, in which he directs, stars, and co-adapts Chuck Hogan's Prince of Thieves. Affleck's Doug MacRay comes from a line of Boston bank robbers. With his father (Chris Cooper) behind bars, he spent most of his childhood in Charlestown with loyal hothead Jem (The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner). Doug had a chance to go legit as a pro hockey player, but he threw it away on drugs and bad behavior. After the armed robbery that opens the film, Jem becomes convinced that bank manager Claire (Vicki Cristina Barcelona's Rebecca Hall) saw something, so Doug, who wore a disguise at the time, sets out to make sure she doesn't tell FBI agent Frawley (Mad Men's Jon Hamm) anything incriminating (Titus Welliver plays Frawley's partner). Doug starts by asking Claire out, and finds she's more shaken than stirred--and that he likes her better than Jem's oxy-addicted sister, Krista (Gossip Girl's Blake Lively), his sometime girlfriend. Unfortunately, neither Jem nor vicious enforcer Fergie (Pete Postlethwaite) will cut him loose until he orchestrates two more scores--the last to take place at Fenway Park. If The Town offers fewer surprises than Affleck's directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, he raises the stakes with well-planned heists, nerve-jangling car chases, and deadly shootouts. Though Affleck looks too clean-cut to portray a thug, he gives a nicely understated performance, while Hall proves an inspired choice as a woman who could make a bad guy turn good--or die trying. --Kathleen C. Fennessy Review: Character driven heist movie - I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I'm not usually a big fan of Ben Affleck (Pearl Harbor put me off!), but he is very good in this. The story is set in a rough neighbourhood, following the tale of a group of bank robbers. One of them (Affleck) is starting to develop a conscience and becomes involved with a woman who could be a potential witness. Meanwhile the FBI are busy hunting the gang down. The real strength of the film lies in the relationships between the characters. Affleck is reasonably convincing as a robber starting to change his mind, and his love interest is sweet and naive and fails to spot that there is anything shady about him. Affleck's loyal but aggressive sidekick is played particularly well by Jeremy Renner, and the long-standing history between his character and Affleck's is portrayed exceptionally well. Interestingly, I found myself feeling some sympathy for the robbers - the idea that some people get stuck in a role they are expected to play was a strong theme of the film. This is not a straightforward action film, nor even just a cat and mouse chase with the FBI, but more an examination of the people within the situation. That said, there are some very good action sequences too, some real suspense and excitement, and some strong violence and language. Really liked it - thought provoking and absorbing. Review: Not to be missed - I have to say that I was almost put-off buying this film because I thought the title 'The Town' was too crass. However, I DID buy it and how happy I am that I did. In my own humble opinion this is a standout movie and deserves to be mentioned at the same time as 'Ronin' or 'Heat'. The action goes from the first minute and doesn't stop until the last scene. Robbery, Murder, Conspiracy and Romance ALL have their place and their part to play in this gritty film, directed brilliantly by Ben Affleck. The casting was perfect with Affleck leading a team of armed robbers whose hits grow evermore dangerous as the prize increases. Jeremy Renner is a borderline psycopath and plays his part very convincingly. The late British actor Pete Postlethwaite is the man who provides all the info. Co-stars include Jon Hamm as the FBI Agent on the case, Blake Lively who sells them out, Rebecca Hall the love interest and Chris Cooper.

Robbers vs. Cops
This is a terrific film . Affleck has confounded all those who thought he had no talent other than being Matt Damon's pal. He can direct, and manages to keep a high level of tension while the story unfolds in multiple directions covering his parents and their relationship as well as his growing up.The evil spider at the centre of this complex web is the great, late, Peter Postlethwaite (who made this shortly before his death). He plans all the robberies in detail and holds sway over the gang that executes his detailed plans, ruling them with an iron fist. When Affleck tries to break away, he is reminded just why he is trapped, in a terrible way that stretches all the way back to his mother whome he thought abandoned the family when he was a child. A great film.

At Last and about time
Never expected much from this and for me it kind of snuck onto DVD without much fuss and borrowed off a friend. One of my top five films is Heat with Pacino and Rob Deniro. Its a great film that for some reason in todays regurgitating market they never seem to have tried to emulate, and those that have, have just been pap. This on the other hand is a fantastic film. Its no Heat (quality of actors, no comparison), but the storyline is great and the action brilliant. If you liked Heat this is well worth your money, 2nd best bank heist movie for your money!

Well crafted and credible but not entirely new
If you have not seen HEAT then this is a good movie with generally strong characterisation. If you have seen HEAT then this is almost a remake. The similarities are just too many. HEAT has a stronger cast and the main police protagonist in TOWN is not helped by poor character development and terrible scripting. That said this is a well assembled movie and Affleck is a believable lead. Rebecca Hall puts in a good performance but her accent is a tad flakey at times - veering between a soft Irish accent at times and a mid Atlantic Bostonian. It merits a space in my movie collection but won't get the outings that my copy of HEAT has had.

Was a great movie for this kind of theme. Had a problem, though: There were some scenes missing (Doug & Claire on the boat, for instance), which I found greatly aggravating. Anyone know what's up with that? Is there a different cut or something I'm not seeing? The movie was good this way, but it was actually improved by those scenes. It really build things up a bit better somehow.
