Not as good as others in the series.
I bought this book after reading the excellent Python Programming for the Absolute Beginner from the same series.I have to say this book is not nearly as good. For a start there are some factual errors in the first chapter, which does not install confidence.Although this book is for the 'Absolute Beginners', it does in places go too far. I am sure that someone who is considering taking up programming will know how to install a program in Windows, and I have no idea why two pages were dedicated to changing the colours of a Windows Command Prompt.In other areas explanations and concepts were lacking, Overall if you persevere with the book it does deliver a reasonable start with Java.

Does exactly what it says on the tin
This book is a fantastic book if you are learning Java from scratch, or even as supplementary reading for a Java course. The language is clear, and the author recognises difficult concepts to emphasise and support with examples. The software shipped with it is also good quality. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has had a bad experience with another Java book, as was in my case.

I'll have to disagree. For an "absolute beginners book", this book is far more complex than it needed to be. The author in my opinion doesnt brake things down or totally explain things enough. Instead he glosses over things(especially towards the middle and end) as if you already have some knowledge of java already. At the end I found myself writing out source code, but not really knowing totally what I was writing!!!

Excellent for programmers with general knowledge
I bought this book and thought the programming projects in the book were awesome. All of the exercises are taught for use in game programming. While the author probably doesn't explain the language and fundamentals in depth (rather terse), he explains the fundamentals of how the games work. I've read Deitel's Java How To Program, and I recommend that to any Java beginners. If you want to learn how to program games in Java such as minesweeper, tetris, and others, get this book! It's awesome!
