We got the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog 76993 Sonic vs Dr. Eggman’s Death Egg Robot set for our 5-year-old, and while it carries the usual LEGO price tag, it’s often on sale, which helps a bit. The build required a lot of handholding, which was expected for his age, but he absolutely loved playing with it afterward. As a big Sonic fan, this set was a hit, allowing him to jump right into the action without needing endless add-ons. However, there are a few downsides. Due to the intended design where Sonic slams into the robot’s chest to detach the back plate and free the critters, the Eggman ride ends up feeling a bit flimsy. It often falls apart just by moving it around, which can be frustrating. Additionally, the little projectiles from the cannon tend to fly off, which is cool in the moment but a nightmare to locate afterward. Despite these issues, it’s a fun set for any young Sonic fan, offering lots of imaginative play.

My 9yr old son used some birthday money to get this recently released set which is arguably the best of the first wave of new Lego Sonic the Hedgehog sets. It captures the look of the iconic Death Egg robot from the Sonic games and associated media well and also includes some nice play features. The set is also the cheapest opportunity to get the new Dr. Eggman big figure, which is particularly desirable and you also get Sonic himself to go against him. I’m more of a Lego Star Wars guy, so I sought my sons views on the set for this review. Basically, he’s very happy with it both as a display model and play feature wise, which I think surprised him a bit with how enjoyable it is to operate the spin dash launcher. He says the only thing that could have made the set better would have been the inclusion of an extra figure given the price point (maybe Orbot, to go with Cubot who is in the set). Lego is expensive, but different sets vary wildly in terms of content and value. Although not my particular chosen theme, having had a good look over the build and seen my son’s obvious satisfaction, this is a decent value set in my opinion.
