Estwing = quality
Love American made tools and Estwing is no exception. You can pay less for a different brand, but you'll get less.

Made in India
I expected an Estwing to be made in Rockford IL, like God intended. However I should have read the specs more closely. Shame on me I suppose. I mean, an Estwing at this price was a heck of a deal. Too good to be true you might say. Now, I know some of their product line is going to be imported. Just the times we live in. But why the hickory handle hammer? The plastic handle is still made in Rockford. Yeah, the one that no one who uses a hammer all day would buy is US made, but the good one, the one with the wood handle is now made in India. What bean counter made that decision? And why India? Nothing against the good people of the country, but it's not exactly known for ISO 9000 certified manufacturing. The government there, let's be honest, isn't exactly looking out for the safety and well being of it's people. What you find is more likely workers in achkan and sandals working in an old, dirt floor factory using an O/A torch to cut out tools from pieces of old ship hulls. Mexico I can understand. I've been repeatedly pleased with Taiwan tools. India though...well at least it's not China. Had I know it was made in India, I would have passed it over. But, the hammer is here in hand and, from all appearances, it looks to be of great quality. A forged head, not cast. American Hickory handle with near perfect grain orientation. The head is tightly hung and has decently faced striking surfaces. I had to give it a solid 4/5 because it is a nice hammer for the price. And that's just it. For twice the price, Vaughan makes one in Woodstock, IL.
