Fits my 1782 TurboBlend (VM0102) 64oz Container
I got this because mine was rusted and warped. I called Vitamix first to see if they could send me a replacement retainer nut, but they said they didn't have that part and offered me a discount on a new container. I got this instead and I am perfectly happy that I did. Works fine, feels quality, no leaks or issues so far. No need to buy the special tool unless you don't have a screwdriver or something to use as a lever and a guy with some elbow grease to unscrew the nut (counterclockwise) from the base of the container. Fit the container on my 1782 TurboBlend 2 Speed (Model # VM0102) and looks like it would fit my mom's newer 5200 Professional-Grade 64oz container as well. The retainer nut this replaced had the part # ASY172 C, but I would guess that if the nut on your container looks like this one, it probably fits.

Works for older Vitamix 5200 + a trick to remove original
Replaced the bloated and cracked original retainer nut on our 64oz Vitamix 5200 pitcher. This one had the o-ring (or u-seal maybe) already installed (it's black, not red) which can be tough to tell if you don't know what you are looking at. If you already have medium-to-large slip-joint pliers (aka channel locks) and a medium crescent wrench, you can *easily* remove the original retainer without the accessory tool. Sit in a chair and hold the pitcher upside down between your legs so the handle is "clocked" away from you and touching your left leg near the knee (so it cannot rotate further, see?). Open the channel lock pliers enough for the jaws to span the retainer nut gap and insert in the gap facing straight down (handles pointed straight up in the air). Then use the crescent wrench on one of the channel lock jaws to turn the entire [channel lock + retainer] setup. Harder to explain, VERY easy to do if you have some mechanical know-how. I will try to add a photo later.

Needed for older pre-Tritan containers
TAKE NOTE: If you own an older Vitamix container, you may need to buy this smaller retainer nut, as I just learned the hard way. If your Vitamix 5000 is an older model like mine, say 1998 or so, then the nut from the original 64 oz container will NOT fit, it's much too large. I just took delivery of the new 32 oz container, only to find this out, and now have to order this smaller nut for $20 here. The newer 32oz container fits inside the 4 rubber pad legs on top of the blender, were as the older, larger container fit over those rubber legs. Hence the new one needs the smaller nut. If you are swapping blades with a newer BPA free 64oz container, you may not need this, double check. Wish I knew this before, but at least now you do!

Vitamix replacement part
I have had my Vitamix Mixer for some time and the bottom (nut) needed replaced. In addition to the nut, I also bought a wrench. It did take some muscle to loosen the nut but I am now set for a good while. It is great to just replace a part instead of replacing the mixer.

The right part for a standard 48oz Vitamix 6300 container
I could not find any confirmation that this was the right part to replace our rusted out retaining nut on our standard 48oz Vitamix 6300 container. I can confirm that this fits and replaces the original ASY 172C nut. It makes a good seal and does not require any additional sealing rings. Very happy to get our 48oz container back in service. It also fits the tall 64oz container that our Vitamix came with.

Is it REALLY the same nut?
I have been upgrading my Vitamix 5000 lately, and have been ordering the new Tritan containers, which work beautifully with the old 5000 base. One of my purchases was a 32 ounce container without blades or nut, because I wanted to use a blade and nut from one of my older containers that had cracked. The blade fits fine, but the old nut was too large. As other people have found out, the 32 oz. container sits inside the lugs of the base, requiring a smaller nut. I ordered this nut, per the descriptions and other reviews, and it arrived today. Right out of the box I was skeptical it would work! It doesn't look like the picture Amazon has posted, and it's different than the nuts on the brand new containers I ordered directly from Vitamix! The diameter IS the same, and the threads fit the old and new blade assemblies just like they should, but instead of having a thick coat of paint, it has a rubberized coating. Instead of having the new orange gasket, the "gasket" is formed as part of the rubberizing. The nut is also thicker by about an eighth of an inch. Now the good (?) news: I took the nut (painted with orange gasket) off my new 32 oz. dry container and put this nut (rubberized, integral gasket, thicker) on it. If the gasket isn't going to seal well, it shouldn't be too much of a problem if I'm grinding dry ingredients and then just doing a quick wash with soapy water. I'll keep an eye on it, though. The nut I took off the new 32 oz. dry container will now go on the new bare 32 oz. container with my older wet blade. I tried both containers on the 5000 base, and everything works...
