If I buy 2 switch consoles, do I need to also buy 2 of every game for the kids to play together on local?

Unfortunately, it seems that you do need to purchase one copy of the game for each switch device. Unlike the xbox, which allows you to play head to head using two xboxes and two tv sets and ONE xbox account and ONE game copy (you can 'family share' to the other xbox and both users can use the same game copy). Sony and Nintendo seem to not allow this. That is why I bought two xboxes instead of Japanese game consoles. Nintendo does not seem to allow sharing a game with a friend locally to play head to head using two switch consoles. So good luck finding 7 other people with nintendo switches and convincing them all to buy the same game so you can all play together with your own consoles in the same room. To do that you need to all play using 8 controllers on ONE switch, which will probably need to be hooked up to a tv so everyone can see the screen. Even the switch lite does not allow one person to use the built in physical controls and one person to use a wireless controller: both must have wireless controllers. Nintendo seems to not understand various (obvious) mobile use case scenarios very well, i.e. head to head or nintendo lite with a friend who has an external controller. Thats why I gave up and just use my phone with the razer junglecat controllers so I can have a portable device that meets all use case scenarios and is way more portable as well.

If i have bought the wii u, will i have to rebuy this version?

If you bought the Wii U version of MK8, and you think you don't need this, you're fooling yourself. It's everything in a single cartridge plus you can play it online, and something they dont really advertise much is if you use ethernet adapters the gane will support 8 players over LAN! it also isn't buggy or glitchy. also, you cant leave your living room with a wii u, i can play mk8d with or vs my friends, while riding the bus using my phone as a hotspot. its amazing. honestly if you're sitting on the wii u version thinking you are good.... wake up

If we preordered this game will the physical copy actually arrive on the 28th or be shipped out on the 28th?

I preordered mine. It's the 28th and still hasn't shipped, even though it claims it'll get here by 8pm tonight. Highly doubt that though since it's the day of and still not shipped.UPDATE: Just as I suspected, it never arrived on time. I've contacted customer service and the lady told me they had trouble with stocking the game to fulfill all the preorders. I asked for my account to be credited since they failed to meet guaranteed delivery date, and was instead given a one month extension of my prime membership once the game actually decides to ship. I asked her what the new delivery date would be and I was told she does not have that information, so I'm guessing I'll get it in a week or more! The customer service lady was nice, and the fault is not hers. But come on Amazon. How hard is it to say "Okay, we have 500 copies of the game. That means we can only allow 500 pre-orders!" No? Too much sense there Amazon? Ridiculous!

Best entertainment ever!!!

Brilliant game for all ages. My 4 year old plays like a champion and competes with his older siblings. Great for getting all the kids together and having a laugh. Would recommend buying the 2 steering wheel accessories (reasonable price) especially if kids playing.

Six years after the release of the last Mario Kart on console, the game re-emerges as a "must have" for the Switch! TL:DR, think of this as a rehash of Mario Kart 7 with some new Dash elements and remastered in HD (when docked). If you bought a Switch, you'll probably buy this... and Splatoon when it releases. If you know a little bit about the Mario Kart series, you know that each episode brings its little more to the table. Mario Kart Wii had the steering wheel and bikes, before that, they added hang-gliders and underwater passages, and before that, there were the loops. What this still lacks is the overall sensation of speed. If you've played Fast RMX, you might be disappointed but Mario Kart games have never been much on the speed feeling aspect -- but rather the actual track bits (ramps, loops, shortcuts, etc). This means you'll run a track many times to find and explore new paths. Still, it's less of a racing game and more of a party game. This is underscored by the awesome (according to my kids) "guided steering" mode. No longer are they bashing into walls on mistakes, they are riding in step with the party. Think of it like bowling with bumpers for beginners vs without. Yep, it's like that. Overall, it's not the most original episode of the series but Mario Kart 8 has the fun side that will ensure its success with the fans as newcomers. Hardcore racers will find the tracks too wide or the feeling of speed too low, but it's not a hardcore racing game. Nintendo has made this more balanced and less frustrating than Mario Kart Wii, more beautiful than Mario Kart 7 and more accessible to new players -- without succumbing to the tragedy that is "Super Mario Run". Finally, don't buy this for single player as the solo experience is rather thin. Grab a few Joycons, invite your friends and play on!
