Masterplug Rewireable Weatherproof Outdoor Inline Socket, 13 Amp, 17 x 6.5 cm, Orange

A robust and solid piece of kit.

Great price and a reasonably well made weatherproof socket. I used this to run a thick extension outside to plug in my 'granny charger' for my plug in hybrid car. Yes I know they don't recommend using extension leads for this but I had some thick 16amp flex and know how to wire things up safely. It all worked well but the EV granny charger cable and plug is very chunky, thicker than any usual 13amp plug and cable so I had to modify the rubber seals in the clam shell tl allow the thicker cable to go in and let the door clip shut.

My sump pump stopped working, but had a very long and excellent quality rubber 3-core 13A flex attached, which I didn't want to throw away with the pump. I cut if off and got this Masterplug rewirable socket, to make a really good quality extension lead. Although the rubber flex is large in diameter, I had no problem inserting it through the rubber grommet of the Masterplug socket. The E, L & N cores were easy to fix into the contacts using the screw-in fasteners sited inside the Masterplug socket. The brass contacts (or brass-effect) seemed reasonable quality and robust enough. No bad or cross-threading. The flex is prevented from pulling out of the socket by flex fasteners just inside the socket flex entrance hole. There is a good fit of rubber "wedges" around this to keep water out. The plug has been marked down by others because the green fastening clip for the Masterplug socket has let people down and has apparently flipped open, but I have found no problem, even using a thick rubber flex. The mechanism seems to work well on my Masterplug socket and holds shut without problems. If it did start to spontaneously open, I think I would rough up the plastic surfaces to provide more friction. The entrance hole for the secondary cable (the cable from your appliance) also has good rubber seals that seem to make good all-round contact, other that for very thin wire (which you would probably not use with this extension cable in any case). The socket is NOT IP66 (or above) waterproof and dustproof rated, so it is NOT to be used in very wet conditions. It does seem to have quite good splashproof properties, but even then, the manufacturer is being cautious in advising that it is NOT to be used in situations where it will be exposed to damp or wet conditions. Provided you understand this and use it within its intended specifications, it should serve you very well. I'm impressed and would recommend this product. I would have given 5* if IP66 rated.

The item is really good and seals really well. The only recommendation I’d make is the plastic retaining clip (holding it shut) could be longer/stronger. It’s popped open a couple of times.
