Does the job well. Comfortable waterproof and warm.
Great hat. Have Lowe alpine Mtn Cap, but unwilling to pay £30-00 + for a spare. This is a classic. Similar design and light. Not heavy material like Triplepoint, but great and is waterproof. Breathes reasonably well, and even my LA one was full of moisture on a cold day from perspiration. Not sure any hat can totally manage the heat which the head generates. Wear a hat in winter because that is where most of the heat is lost. Very true, hence the build up of perspiration. If you expect Miracles then you will not get them in any outdoor clothing. This does what is designed to, at a reasonable price with a quality finish. Versatile hat that does what others do for an extra £20-00. Would recommend and buy again. Just remember you will always get some perspiration around the forehead and side of the head owing to the tight fit.The erst of the hat keeps you warm and does not hold moisture and, When you stop the hard effort of a mountain ascent this moisture will disappear after a while. I have a 56cm head and bought the Small/Medium [here sized as Medium]. Fitted nicely. If you really want something waterproof and less warm skin is just that. Be reasonable in your expectations!

Keeps the rain off
On the basis of other reviews I got this in the large although I would normally expect to get a medium for hats. It fits comfortably round the band, with a little give of elastic at the nape and a strap at the back which I didn't find contributed much. The 'large' seems to be that they give more room in the top of the hat and I therefore have an excess of fabric giving it a rather tall, square look. However, because the band is quite snug, the ear flaps sit very close to the side of the head - good for keeping wind and cold out of ears, but not so good for the image concious. The overall effect is not very flattering which somewhat puts me off wearing it but for days when the weather is bad enough, I'm glad to have a dry head and most people are too busy with umbrella's blowing inside out to notice your tall hat. It is fleece lined, apart from the brim which can be buttoned back. The brim also has a wire to help hold it in place on a windy day and pull down lower to protect glasses. It is light and will scrunch down flat in my bag when I don't want to wear it but want to have it handy. Overall I recommend this, despite sizing issues.

A hat which is waterproof, warm and versatile.
I have a really great waterproof coat. Alas, I lost it's hood. After searching I decided to try the Highlander Mountain Hat. It is the same black as my coat. This hat can be worn as a straight forward cap (with ear covers tucked in) or a full thermal, waterproof hat with ear covers and a lower head back. It has a real feeling of quality about it and is softly lined with insulating material. It can be folded to go into a coat pocket. The peak edge is reinforced to keep it in place. There is elastication to keep it in place when it's windy. There is a rear adjuster to alter the hat size so it will fit well. It is suitable for general weather proof wearing and would be great for outdoor activities like fishing, country walking etc. If like me you're concerned about losing it try a length of black elastic from a haberdasher to secure it to your coat...long enough to pocket it when not in use. A brilliant solution to my problem.

Best hat for winter and wet weather
The Highlander is certainly the hat to buy for our wet and windy climate as it is waterproof and seems to grip onto the head in the fiercest gales. The big advantage in having the ear flaps (which, by the way, look less obvious when worn than would appear in the photo) is no earache from exposure to the elements. This hat keeps out the cold effectively as it's fleece-lined, but is surprisingly light and not bulky. The adjustable front peak is a guard against the low wintertime sun but can be buttoned back if preferred. Very versatile! It's not exactly stylish, but looks much better than most winter hats which are designed for protection rather than fashion. I bought the khaki Highlander mountain hat as well, so that I can co-ordinate with whatever I'm wearing. Size-wise, the navy one is a bit roomier that the other, but only moderately too large, so not a problem.

Comfortable and warm
The cap is warm in cold weather, and does a good job of covering my ears. The peak can be adjusted easily to either keep sun out of the eyes, or to protect from wet. I haven't worn it in really wet weather yet, so can't comment on how waterproof it is, but have no reason to suspect it isn't. It's light enough to be able to pack away conveniently in my back pack when I don't need to wear it. It fits well, doesn't blow off in the wind, and I'm pleased with the purchase. Good value.

Great Hat, lightweight but not firm and shaped right.
I'm a 58cm size head and the hat fitted perfectly. The hat is nicely made, good quality and would seem as it would be waterproof; I never managed to wear it past trying it on as I returned it. Sadly the hat did not look or feel as I wanted. It is slightly shaped narrower at the top and the peak is too small and floppy despite the wire apparently inside it. Perfect for the warmth and to do the job it is designed to do along with being lightweight too but just not the look I liked when it was on my head. Its not a dual fashion and functional item; its purely functional in my opinion hence the three stars. 5 stars for functionality.
