Canon EF 100 2.8L MACRO IS U

I've been a Canon fan for many years having owned several of their FD range cameras and lenses back in the very dim and distant past. Amongst those was a Canon FD 100mm F2 lens which could produce some exceptional results. I was half tempted to go back to the Canon FD system when I saw a T90 outfit for sale on eBay. But there was only one FD 100mm F2 lens available (in MINT+ condition whatever the **** that is?!)and the seller wanted almost £500...er no! So I spotted an EOS-3 for sale and plumped for that, I also bagged a PG-E2 power grip and I was away. And of course I then had to have an EF 100mm F2 lens. First impressions were excellent. Substantially built,well balanced, lightning fast autofocus and great handling were all apparent on first examination. With my EOS 3 combo it also fitted very well indeed making for a stable easy to hold package. It proved to be an utter delight to use and I was very happy with it. It also has a instant manual focus option activated by turning the focussing ring irrespective of whether the camera/lens is in AF or MF. And the results? SUPERB! At least with my EOS-3 film camera. All pics were sharp and produced excellent contrast and colour rendering. I would rate the results as good as a (sadly long discontinued) Minolta 100mm f2 AF lens I owned for a short while back in 1990-and that is saying something. Sharpness is perfectly good even at F2 though it improves dramatically at about f 4 reaching a peak at F5.6/8. And another point, out of focus background or Bokeh is excellent. Any drawbacks? I would have liked to have been issued with a lenshood and case. If Sigma can supply them as standard why not Canon? This lens has been around for 20 years or so and is probably due for an update, the replacement being designed for Digital cameras and incorporating a stabiliser. These feature will also add at least £150 onto the price. Overall, I am delighted with this lens. Others might disagree with my title preferring the 85mm F1.2 L, 85mm F1.8 or the 135mm F2 L. But IMHO the 100mm is the perfect overall choice. 85mm is for me not quite there whilst 135mm is just a tad too long. Do yourselves a favour and buy this lens if you are a Canon SLR user. It produces stunning results and deserves to be more than a hidden gem in the rich tapestry of Canon EF lenses.

By golly this lens is sharp! I thought I'd seen sharp optics before, but this lens is in a different league, it's tack-sharp all the way from wide open at f/2.8 through to the point at which diffraction starts to become noticeable at around f/22. You can safely use it at any aperture and be assured of image quality which will exceed almost anything else on the market. Build-quality feels slightly plasticky for a canon L series optic, but it does have metal where it counts along with a weather-sealing rubber gasket. The hood's a little on the large size, and when reversed it completely covers the focussing-ring, distance scale, and focus/image stabilisation switches which is a pain. The IS system seems to operate very well, it's one of canon's latest hybrid systems which is supposed to compensate for both up/down/left/right and tilting movements, and it's very quiet compared to the earlier (3-stop) incarnations of the IS system. Focussing is near instantaneous and as near silent as you can get. It's a big lens for it's focal length, and the elements are large (especially the rearmost element) as it's relatively wide aperture, all of which makes it reasonably heavy but not overly so, and it's nicely weighted. It'll reproduce a 1:1 image, like most true Macro glass, but the 4-stop IS only offers a 2-stop advantage at 1:1 which isn't really a problem as the depth-of-field, even at smaller apertures, is sufficiently small that you'll want to use a tripod to steady the camera. Overall this is a great lens which I'd wholeheartedly recommend for anyone wanting a good Macro lens.

If I could only have one lens, it would be this one. The 50mm f/1.2L and 50mm Macro are my other two favourites, but this incredible lens does absolutely everything. Its macro abilities are honestly second to none - even at its widest aperture it's pin sharp. That shouldn't be possible! It's large, and it's heavy, so you'll definitely want to make sure you have a good, solid tripod, but it's worth its weight, and then some. Bokeh, sharpness... all of it. Perfect. The *only* issue with it is it tends to be slightly darker on the colours - they need brightening during editing slightly, but that's no big issue. It's quick with its autofocus, and it's super accurate. I prefer finding my own focus points manually but if you need to depend on autofocus in a pinch, you can absolutely trust it. So, aye, if I could only use one lens for the rest of my life, it would be this one.

This is a fantastic lens. Pin sharp with a smooth and creamy bokeh. The IS system is very effective but you will still need a tripod if you are focusing down to 1:1 or thereabouts. Use the focus limiters as you will find it tends to hunt quite a lot if you are not in the right range. The biggest thing you need to know about this lens it to make sure the IS system has stopped running and is "parked" before you remove it from the lens. I have not done this a couple of times in haste and it leaves the inner element in a free state, rather than being locked safely in place, rattling around inside the body, which can be a bit scary initially and could cause damage over time if not addressed. However, the two times I have had this happen, it has not caused any damage whatsoever and the lens is still in perfect condition and functionality. Well worth every penny of the price. It is a bargain in my mind and is rarely off my camera. I also use it as a general walk-about lens for landscapes and portraits etc. However, it is, as I said, pin sharp and can show up details that you might not want to see! ;-)

Que dire sur ce produit, à peine reçu on découvre un objectif aux finitions impeccable, la bague de mise au point est juste comme il faut, ni trop dur, ni trop souple, permettant ainsi une mise au point précise, la qualité de la lentille n'est plus à prouver avec cet objectif on exploite vraiment tout le potentiel de son boitier. L'autofocus est vraiment plutôt précis et réactif, il est assez rare qu'il patine sauf en cas de faible luminosité ou faible différences de contrastes auquel cas la mise au point manuel sera obligatoire (en même temps faire sa mise au point à l'autofocus en macro c'est un peu casse-gueule). Le stabilisateur d'image n'est pas ici un gadget, dès lors que l'on sait tenir son boitier il fait des miracles, plus de flou de bougé à 1/30 et sans effort particulier, un vrai régal à utiliser. Une dernière chose, la mise au point sur cette objectif ne pardonne pas, elle est d'une grande précision et il faut prendre le temps d'apprivoiser votre objectif, nombreuses sont les photos avec un léger décalage de mise au point au début, par la suite on apprend à le manier et là ça devient orgasmique. La sacoche fournit avec est vraiment plus un gadget que vraiment d'une grande utilité, elle est cependant très bien fini avec le petit logo Canon embossé sur la partie cuir. Le part-soleil est lui par contre de grande qualité, fournit avec l'objectif L, il possède un revêtement en velours qui permet d'éviter les reflets sur celui-ci, il reste cependant que ce type de revêtement est très friand de poussière et vous demandera de le nettoyer de temps à autre. Au niveau des regrets je n'en aurais qu'un seul à donner pour cette objectif, je regrette d'avoir pris du L car quand on goûte à la gamme prestige de chez Canon, on a plus envie d'acheter quoi que ce soit d'autre que du L.

Bislang habe ich Porträtfotos immer mit dem Canon 50mm 1.8 STM gemacht. Eine geniale Linse für kleines Geld. Da ich aber manchmal beim Fotografieren lieber etwas im Hintergrund bleibe und auch mal gerne Kinder beim Spielen (unbemerkt) fotografiere, habe ich mich auf die Suche nach etwas mehr Brennweite gemacht. Lichtstärke und die damit verbundene Möglichkeit der Freistellung (fokussiertes Motiv scharf und Hintergrund möglichst unscharf) waren mir dabei sehr wichtig. Also, eine weitere Festprennweite musste her! Schnell war klar, dass ich mich zwischen dem 85mm 1.8 und dem 100mm 2.0 entscheiden musste (wollte). Mehr als 100mm waren mir am Crop zu lang. Das 100mm schnitt in allen Tests super ab und auch in den Foren kam es gut weg. Da das 85mm näher an meinem 50mm war, entschied ich mich für das 100mm. An der Kommunion unseres Sohnes sollte es zum ersten Mal zum Einsatz kommen. Natürlich habe ich vorher ein paar Testfotos geschossen :-) Und was soll ich sagen....es war Liebe auf den ersten "Klick". Das Objektiv ist bereits ab Offenblende (2.0) dermaßen scharf, der Autofokus blitzschnell und es zaubert ein wahnsinnig schönes, weiches Bokeh (also einen tollen unscharfen Hintergrund). Ich war und bin wirklich absolut begeistert von dieser Linse! Obwohl einige Stimmen sagten, es sei am Crop zu lang für Porträtfotos, so hat sich diese Befürchtung für mich in keinster Weise bestätigt. Klar, man muss ein bisschen weiter weg bleiben beim Fotografieren. Aber genau das wollte ich ja auch! Ich habe es sogar einmal im Standesamt benutzt, um die Hochzeit einer Freundin festzuhalten. Dabei habe ich Detailaufnahmen gemacht, sprich mal nur die Hände beim Ringtausch oder die Hand bei der Unterschrift. Alles bei Offenblende und ohne Blitz. Die Bilder wurden super! Allerdings nutze ich das Objektiv im Normalfall draußen, da man drinnen schon Platz braucht. Es ist meine Porträtlinse Nr. 1 geworden. Ach so...auch Tiere lassen sich damit gut ablichten. Ein paar Beispiele lade ich hier hoch. Ich nutze das Objektiv an der EOS 750D und an der EOS 80D, an beiden performt es wirklich hervorragend. Ich würde es jederzeit wieder kaufen!

Me decidí por este antes que por el nuevo Tamron F017 ya que tenía muy claro la probada calidad del Canon 100, Afortunadamente lo he conseguido a un buen precio, porque este objetivo tiene unas oscilaciones tremendas del mismo y hay que tener paciencia para encontrar el mejor momento. Es un clásico ya, pero se mantiene en lo alto de la calidad. Nada se puede añadir a la construcción y a su sellado, pero si he notado mejor calidad de imagen y un mejor acierto, más preciso, con el AF que los que tenía. Simplemente es una gozada trabajar con él, muy silencioso y esa diferencia de focal que tiene con un 90 ¡se nota! Con el anillo para trípode, (o para colocarle horizontalmente) es un complemento excelente, muy útil. Recomendada su compra, desde luego,

Ich besitze diese Linse nun seit mehr als zweieinhalb Jahren und bin immer noch begeistert von diesem Glas. Dies war mein erstes L-Objektiv und damals hatte ich es an der Crop-Kamera Canon EOS 500D benutzt. An Crop-Kameras kann man den Makromodus am besten nutzen. Da wäre die 1,6x Brennweitenerhöhung was gut für Tiere mit einer hohen Fluchtdistanz sind. Ebenfalls ist die Tiefenschärfe höher, womit man nicht so stark Abblenden muss, denn gerade in der Makrofotografie müssen häufig höhere Blendenwerte benutzt werden. Nun benutze ich dieses Objektiv an der Vollformatkamera Canon EOS 6D Vollformat Digital-SLR Kamera mit WLAN und GPS (20,2 Megapixel, 7,6 cm (3 Zoll) Display, DIGIC 5+) nur Gehäuse . Auch hier lassen sich wunderschöne Makrofotos realisieren, allerdings liebe ich dieses Objektiv im Bereich der Porträtfotografie. Mit 100 mm und einer 2,8 Offenblende lassen sich wunderschöne Kopfporträts realisieren, denn das Bokeh von diesem Objektiv ist ein Traum. Verarbeitung: -Die Haptik ist aus sehr hochwertiger Plastik gefertigt und fühlt sich sehr gut in der Hand an. Der Fokussiertrieb läuft butterweich und es ist kein Problem im Makrobereich die richtige Schärfenebene zu selektieren. Das Objektiv ist Spritzwasser und Staub geschützt und die Gummidichtung zwischen Objektiv und Gehäuse sieht nach über zwei Jahren noch so aus wie neu. Zudem wackelt und klappert nichts und eine Gegenlichtblende ist auch dabei welche genauso hochwertig ist. -Im Autofokusbetrieb kann man zwischen verschiedenen Modi wählen, was die Fokussierdauer stark beschleunigt. Allerdings ist es häufig nicht ratsam im Makromodus mit den Autofokus zu arbeiten, da hier der Autofokus häufig nicht trifft. Im Porträtbereich ist dieser allerdings sehr schnell und genau. -Der Bildstabilisator mit 4 Stufen hält was er verspricht. Dadurch lassen sich besser Low-Light Aufnahmen ohne Blitz und Stativ realisieren, oder bei Filmen aus der Hand trumpft dieser ebenfalls auf. Jedoch ist dieser im Makrobereich nicht wirklich sinnvoll, denn je naher man den Motiv kommt, desto weniger bringt der Bildstabilisator etwas. -Die Kombinierung von Telekonvertern aus dem Hause Canon ist nicht möglich. Abhilfe bietet hier z.B.: Kenko DGX MC4 1,4x-Konverter Canon , welcher in Tests sogar bessere abschneidet als die von Canon. Ebenfalls ist eine Objektivschelle nicht im Preis enthalten. Wer häufig mit Stativ arbeitet und rasch zwischen Hoch- u. Querformat wechseln möchte muss zusätzlich in die Tasche greifen. Optische Leistung: -Die Schärfe ist schon bei Offenblende von Mitte bis zu Rand sehr gut und lässt sich durch Abblenden nur minimal steigern (bei höheren Blenden kommen dann Beugungseffekte dazu und die Schärfe geht zurück). Ich benutze es meistes bis f/16 und nur in wenigen Makromotiven greife ich auf höhere Blenden zurück. -Die chromatischen Aberrationen sind sehr gering und tauchen nur bei hohen Kontrasten und kleinen Blendenwerten auf. Allerdings hatte ich nie ein Problem diese durch eine Software (z.B.: Lightroom) zu entfernen. -Die Vignettierung ist ebenfalls nur bei kleinen Blendenwerten zu sehen und kaum erwähnenswert. -Die Hintergrundschärfe (Bokeh) ist einfach nur ein Traum. Gerade ein Objektiv was in Makro- u. Porträtbereich auftrumpft profitiert davon ungemein. Preis/Leistungsverhältnis: -Da dieses Objektiv nicht nur in der Makrofotografie zu Hause ist, ist der Preis in einen guten Bereich. Man bekommt ein top verarbeitetes Objektiv, welches eine hervorragende optische Leistung bietet. Falls man ein Objektiv sucht welches ausschließlich für Makrofotos herhalten soll kann man Geld sparen indem man sich nach Varianten ohne Bildstabilisator umschaut. Kurz und knackig: ++ Schärfe (f/2,8-f/16: sehr gut; f/16-f/22: in Ordnung; >f/22: besser als nichts ;) ) + Lichtstärke ++ Haptik (sehr hochwertige Plastik und alles gut verarbeitet) ++ IS mit 4 Stufen (im Porträtbereich u. Videomodus sinnvoll / im Makrobereich nahezu sinnlos) + Preis (Makrofotografie in ähnlicher Qualität geht auch günstiger) - CANON Stativschelle D fuer EF 100mm 1:2,8L Macro IS USM muss separat gekauft werden (Orginal überteuert) - Canon-Telekonverter sind nicht kombinierbar Fazit: Es gibt viele Gelegenheiten dieses Objektiv einzusetzen, weswegen ich hier auch gerne 5 Sterne vergebe. Die Verarbeitung und optische Leistung sind das Geld wert.

Ho comprato questa lente ormai due anni fa, montandola su una Canon 80D (crop sensor), ora la sto utilizzando su una Sony A7III con adattatore. Dopo un intenso utilizzo posso dire che è una delle migliori lenti che abbia mai utilizzato, Canon non si smentisce. COSTRUZIONE E DESIGN: La lente si presenta molto elegantemente, la plastica che la compone è molto solida, la ghiera è molto ampia e precisa (dopo due anni di utilizzo è ancora solida e integra), i vari switch (ne sono presenti 3: AF-MF, Stabilizzatore acceso/spento, range di messa a fuoco FULL/0.3m-0.5m/0.5m-infinito) sono ben fatti e ben riconoscibili al tatto. Appena tolto l'obiettivo dalla confezione balza all'occhio l'elemento frontale in vetro, una chicca per gli occhi. Quello che aiuta a rendere l'obiettivo di qualità è sicuramente il mount Canon EF in metallo. UTILIZZO: L'obiettivo presenta uno stabilizzatore interno, fondamentale per la fotografia macro in mancanza di treppiede, che funziona egregiamente. Il motore di messa a fuoco USM è silenzioso e preciso, garantendo vibrazioni minime. Infine il diaframma a 9 lamelle con apertura massima di f/2.8 rende questo obiettivo estremamente luminoso e dotato di un bokeh molto gradevole. La qualità delle immagini scattate è quello che ci si aspetta da una lente della serie L Canon: nitidezza impressionante, aberrazioni cromatiche praticamente inesistenti anche a massima apertura e vignettatura assente. La focale fissa garantisce qualità e luminosità per un prezzo tutto sommato contenuto, ma ovviamente può essere limitante rispetto ad uno zoom. In conclusione reputo questa lente un'aggiunta consigliatissima a chiunque si voglia approcciare al mondo della fotografia Macro, ma anche come lente da ritratto, e ricerchi la qualità nello scatto.
