really good :)
arrived ''super'' quickly, good packaging and a pretty wonderful product. slightly on the plastic side, but works very well. it is possible to see cells at the zoom this offers, perfect detail and focus can be acquired with the right adjustments on the turret. specimens also come with the product witch can be looked at right out of the box. with a substantial zoom, LOADS of other accessories and speedy delivery it a perfect gift for youngsters...although im 16 :P

Good starter microscope
For the price, it's a good starter microscope. There are a few sample slides, so we bought a pack containing loads (which was quite pricey, but ultimately worth it when we watched the kids checking out all the different things under the microscope).. we were then on the hunt for other things to try.. so we pulled out some hair.. and popped on some grains of sugar (pictured). It's been good to leave it around for the kids to come back to. The High magnification is pretty useless, but Low and Medium are good.. and reasonably easy for a 5yr old and 8yr old to get into focus (and generally, when an adult sets it, it's correct for nearly all the slides). The LED is very bright.. we use it with sunlight most of the time. I found that switching out the viewing lens to one that's less magnified (supplied in the box) is a bit better for seeing slightly less detail, but getting to see more of what you're looking at.

Excellent starter kit for a child with some very good ...
Excellent starter kit for a child with some very good pre-prepared slides plus plenty of spares for interesting things you find yourself. Good light and easy to change lenses and very easy to focus (important). If you're researching a cure for some illness, it's not for you. If you're 7 years old and want to look at a flea, it's perfect.

Hmmmm...
Well, I guess if you're 3-8 years old, this would be ok, but I bought this as a bit of a hobby microscope and I have to say, although I didn't expect too much, it came well below what I hoped for. Having read the other reviews, I decided to go for it, but I found the magnification to be extremely blurry; half the time you don't know what you're staring at, and the slides and coverslips it came with are made of cheap (pre-scratched) plastic, so no good for any detailed observations. I would have returned it, but of course, to see if it is any good, I had to use it, so I'm stuck with it. I'm giving it 3 stars, as I think it is fine for a very young child, but beyond that I would not recommend it.

LANDFILL READY JUNK!
ABSOLUTE JUNK! If this was £10, I could except that it was junk, but it was £25. For that price, I'd at least expect the damn thing to be of some educational use. Utter waste of money.

Highly Recommended
I bought this microscope for one of my uni projects, as an art student I was hoping to get some interesting imagery through the lens as visual research, and that's exactly what I got. I'm no expert on microscope quality/pricing but I feel that this item is brilliant value for money. It is easy to use even for a beginner, just pop 2xAA batteries underneath (screwdriver required) to use the built in LED light to illuminate your slides, or if you're in bright enough light flip the LED over to use the mirror. Easy to focus - just choose your power setting (low/med/high but low power seems to be enough...) and turn to focus. 3 prepared slides are included - they're brilliant! There's also everything you could need.. blank slides, tweesers, petri dishes, vials etc. the only problem I have with this product is that I can't think of what to put under it next.. :)

Item faulty
The light appears to have been assembled incorrectly. It does not shine on the item being viewed. Looked great when we took it from the box, appeared to be good quality. Very disappointed little girl who received this for a Christmas present!

Daughter loved it.
Bought this for my 11 year old daughter and it was a real hit as a Christmas present. She has looked at all sorts of things including her own blood and saliva! I would recommend a set of the prepared slides too as the prepared slides with the microscope are a bit limited. Overall a nice entry level microscope that is well packed with good accessories.

I'll start out by pointing out that this is a $35 microscope. It has its limitations, and I doubt if this model is in use at the CDC. But for the money, it's an excellent buy. We got this one for our five-year-old son, who enjoys it very much, and is able to use it. He started out with quite a bit of adult guidance, but he is now able to use it by himself. As far as I can tell, the optics are quite good. There do appear to be a couple of minor flaws, so that if the microscope is out of focus, some phantom images come into view. But as it is focused, they disappear, and you get a clear image. From some of the other reviews, it appears that the lamp sometimes fails to work. Ours works much better than expected, but I wouldn't consider the electric light to be critical. The microscope is actually easier to use with the mirror, and you generally get a better image. The trick is to place a bright light in front of the microscope, shining on the mirror. A desk lamp works well. Then, before attemting to focus the microscope, move the mirror around until the light through the eyepiece is brightest. Only then should you begin to focus. Start with the lowest magnification, carefully focus the image, and then carefully move the slide around to center the image. After you have focused it with the lowest magnification, then increase the magnification (without moving anything else), and then repeat the process of focusing. In most cases, it's best to stay with the lowest magnification. But you should always start with the lowest magnification. If the bulb burns out, it should be possible to replace it at any almost any hardware store. Simply show them the bulb, and they will find one the same shape and size. The only other piece of information you need to give is the voltage, which would be three volts. But again, if the bulb burns out or fails to work for some reason, better results can be obtained with the mirror. In any event, a burnt out lightbulb shouldn't induce the levels of trauma suggested by some other reviewers. You certainly shouldn't just stop using the microscope and simply wait for the manufacturer to send you a new bulb. Louis Pasteur probably didn't have an electric light on his microscope, and you child doesn't need one either! If you understand the limitations and take care when adjusting the focus knob, you will get excellent results from this microscope. It comes with enough prepared slides so that you can begin looking at things right away. I would recommend starting with the prepared slides. Once you've figured out how the microscope works, you will be able to move on to other items. Other reviewers have pointed out that many of the accessories are of very poor quality. The slides are actually quite good, and since they're plastic, you don't need to worry about breakage. Another reviewer correctly pointed out that the warning about sharp objects is absolutely unnecessary, since the "scalpel" is made out of plastic, and is incapable of cutting, intentionally or otherwise. We originally intended to remove the scalpel before giving the microscope to our son, but that was not necessary. The various other petri dishes, eye droppers, etc., are perfectly functional. This is not a toy microscope. It is a completely functional microscope that happens to be cheap enough that it can be given to kids as a very educational toy. It's an exceptional value for the money.
