Meze 99 Classics Walnut Silver Headphones (Silver & Black)

Brilliant headphones, they are bit more bassy and bit sharp out of the box, but they settled down slightly after few days of use, they are now exactly what I wanted, no eq or dsp needed like with many others I’ve tried. They are light so it’s easy to forgot you wear them, build quality is very good and they looking really nice. They definetly worth the money

Beautiful piece of kit, whilst muddy on the kick-off; some EQ puts these in a very comfortable profile. I'll admit I bought these to look nice and be comfortable vs. sound the best; and that is exactly what they're doing.

Only received today, but already got a few hours under my belt. Build quality is fantastic. Looks (walnut and silver version) are stunning. Comfortable to wear. Sound stage is impressive for a closed back headphone. Will continue to use my Beyerdynamic T51i's for my daily commute, but the Mezes will be used for all other occasions. Great job Meze 5*'s.

I was going through a phase of trying out different headphones to decide what I liked. These were OK sounding, not as good as I had hoped for hence returning them. The return process to get the refund too quite a long time from memory and I had to chase it up with Amazon (which is not always the case) As a product I would say they were value for money and do look great and are comfy, but the lower end frequency just didn't hit the spot for me.

Very good sound quality, very comfortable. These have as much clarity as my Audio Technica Ath-M50x but they did need equalizing to get a more neutral sound. Once that's done they sound great.

Straight out of the box I was struck by the beautiful design of the headphones with the wood cups a real standout - much more striking that the pictures. Obviously what matters most is the sound. I’ve always preferred in ears in the past and have many pairs ranging from £100 to £700. The in ears are on a par with the more expensive in ears I have. Incredibly musical and immersive is the best way I can describe it. You can really get lost in the music. Very impressed and I can’t wait until they are properly worn in. Big thumbs up to Meze!!

Maybe I've been spoilt with other cans, but I immediately found these far far too bassy - the bass overwhelmed everything and swamped out all detail. The treble is also quite recessed / rolled off, making the whole presentation seem like lumpy mud. If you like a ton of overkill bass, then these are for you - but if you want something more natural sounding with crisp treble then I'd look elsewhere. Having said that, build quality is very nice indeed, and they are very light and comfortable; they come with a well-made zip case too. So if the above sound signature appeals to you, then you may like them. They have a lot of rave reviews from various people, so maybe I'm over-sensitive to bass. Sadly, the killer bass has put me off the brand; it's the first Meze I've tried and it really doesn't do it for me at all. I wouldn't dare buy the Empyrean (if I could afford it) after this experience. If you want elevated bass but a more crisp and natural mid/treble I can highly recommend the Shure SRH-1540 (mine are now quite old and need replacement). Natural sounding closed back headphones are hard to find!

I just happened to get one with quite large woodgrains which did not look as good as the fine woodgrains seen in the picture. There are 2 very small surface blemishes where the wood finish has been chipped. Having said that, sound quality is great in my limited experience, lookes incredibly sleek, wires and adapters are very well designed and included in a neat package. Very unique product, I got this partly to support the work of the design team since I like the way it has been developed.

These are great headphones and have become favs among the dozen plus set of cans I own. Very stylish with amazing build quality. Comfort is outstanding as they adjust automatically when you put them on and the pads very nice. The sound has a fairly flat profile with bit warmth in the mids and great bass presence....very musical and addicting. Very easy to drive and sound great also with tubes. Comes with a great box and I have purchased a Meze silver plated upgrade cable and sounds amazing. I highly recommend the Meze 99 Classic Series.

Soy un "audiophile wannabe", aunque he ido mejorando mi equipo, no me puedo considerar un experto con una inversión sustancial en equipo de audio, por lo que mi opinión está basada en lo que me gusta y no en parámetros técnicos. Estos audífonos son fantásticos, he tenido Denon, Bang & Olufsen, Bose y Sony, entre otros, y estos Meze son los mejores. Migré de unos Bosé Quiet Comfrot a unos Sony WH-1000XM5, ambos muy buenos para viajar en avión. Los Sony excelentes para reducir el ruido y poder trabajar y hacer llamadas en lugares bulliciosos con una app que te permite hacer muchos ajustes y con sonido 360 via bluetooth. La música se oye bien en los Bosé y algo mejor en los Sony, sobretodo conectados a un DAC bueno como el Cambridge DAC Magic 200, pero los Meze son un auténtico salto de calidad. En los Meze la música cobra vida, tienen mayor claridad y existe una verdadera separación de los instrumentos y las voces; puedes escuchar detalles que con los otros no, y además son comodísimos, no te pesan y puedes escuchar música por horas sin fatiga. Los uso para escuchar Tidal y Qobuz directamente o a través de Roon que también maneja mi colección de CD's quemados. Los super recomiendo para alguien que como yo ha venido evolucionando en la calidad del equipo de audio y no ha tenido oportunidad de escuchar varios tipos audífonos de este nivel o más sofisticados y caros, cosa que es muy difícil de hacer en México dónde ya quedan muy pocas tiendas especializadas del audio.

The build style of these suits my eye nicely, different than anything I've had before. The build does feel a little weak, I'll hope they hold up well, but they look very nice. Headband for my obscenely oversized melon adjusts just enough thank god & sits very lightly and comfortably. Pads can get warm, I have to air out every 20-30 minutes. Headphones come with two sets of cables, I'm not up to speed on the connector type names, but with two connection types & an adaptor, it's very likely they come with what you need & won't need an additional purchase. No balanced connection though, but for this price that's just not an option. Comes nicely packed and with a fairly hard sided case. Impressed with that as well. As for sound, holy mighty lord. I was shocked with the sound, you'd think these were $1k+ headphones. Very easy to power them compared to my Focal Clears. The mids & highs are unbeatable. I'm not pulling your leg, mids & highs cannot be beat, & again, this price? Wow. Bass is loud & full. Only drawback I can put on these is the bass though. It's muddy, lacks detail for sure & you'll notice that right away. I EQ my phones & I've had to pull back the bass just because of the muddiness. I love me my bass but when it's this muddy, I conceded & had to pull it back. However, pulling the bass back just leaves the sound amazing, you will appreciate it very much if you're pushing them with a good source. I use a Topping DAC & amp, eq'd with a Schitt. I might explore, experiment with different cables with hopes of clearing up the bass somehow, maybe a burn in will help as well. If successful, these will beat my Focal Clears by a mile. For audiophiles, I'd say the soundstage is rather narrow & closed in. Typical of closed backs I know. I actually prefer that sound myself. Separation is easily noticeable though.. If you're looking for a cheap, great value addition to your collection like I was, these are it. I'd venture to guess EQ'ing them is probably a need, you'll want the ability to adjust the damned bass.

Ich werde mich nicht in schwelgerischen Ergüssen ergehen. Ich höre seit 40 Jahren intensiv über KH Musik und habe eine Reihe von guten Geräten durch. Ich weiß, dass ein KH für den einen gut klingt, für den anderen nicht. Das ist für viele Enthusiasten eine Philosophie, und eigentlich bin ich auch so einer. Das Klangbewertungsproblem hat man bei niedrigpreisigen KH'n genauso wie mit den hochwertigsten KH'n - die individuelle Beurteilung variiert mit den körperlichen Eigenschaften des Gehörs, die bei jedem anders sind, was auch für Geruch, Geschmack und Sensorik zutrifft. Warum ist der eine dort kitzlig, die andere aber nicht? Warum ist dem einen dasselbe Bier zu bitter, dem anderen aber noch nicht bitter genug? Versalzen oder nicht? Zu laut oder nicht? Zu basslastig oder nicht? Schrill oder lebendige Höhen? Dann kommt die Technik der Soundquelle dazu. Wie ist die Aufnahme, wie das Wiedergabegerät. In einer Rezi zum Meze heißt es z. B., der Sound sei matschig. Wie der Rezenzent darauf kommt, kann ich nicht beurteilen, denn der KH klingt alles andere als matschig. Wahrscheinlich hatte er nur eine schlechte Klangquelle. Wer also einen KH nach dem Probehören beim Händler kauft, weil er ihm klaglich gefallen hat, läuft Gefahr, dass der KH zu Hause nicht mehr gefällt: Das Wiedergabegerät wirft den Klang anders aus. Ich wollte einen Sennheiser Momentum 2 austauschen, den ich vor einigen Jahren noch als kabelgebundene Version kaufen konnte. Dieser KH überzeugt mich heute noch und er hat mir in Verbindung mit dem Sennheiser Flex 5000, ein geniales Funksystem zum Anschluss von Kopfhörern, um in der Wohnung mobil sein zu können, und an Mobilgeräten sehr, sehr gute Dienste geleistet bei für diesen Preis tollem Klang. Mit sehr guten HiFi-Geräten hält er aber nicht mit (und sollte er konzeptionell auch nicht). Nachdem er täglich über Jahre hinweg genutzt wurde, darf er mit sich einstellenden Schwächen in Rente gehen. Leider gibt es ihn jetzt nur noch wireless, was in der Regel mit Klangeinbußen verbunden ist, und deshalb musste ich wieder suchen. Auf den Meze gestoßen bin ich neugierig geworden. Was soll ich sagen? Es stimmt, wenn die Rezenzenten schreiben, dass die Material- und Verarbeitungsqualität herausragend ist, jedenfalls für diesen Preis. Einzig die Polster hätte ich gerne in Echtleder gehabt. Das aber ist ein Fertigungsproblem, denn nicht jedes Leder ist geeignet und die Produktion lässt sich nicht wie bei Kunstleder standardisieren. Ein Lieferant von Sennheiser hat aktuell damit Probleme. Der KH sitzt streng, aber das soll er auch, denn er ist für mobile Einsatzzwecke gedacht und darf nicht verrutschen. Aber er sitzt nicht unbequem. Langzeit habe ich noch nicht ausprobiert. Jetzt sitze er eine Stunde auf den Ohren, genauer: neben den Ohren, auf, aber ich trage ihn ohne Probleme. An dem Sennheiser Flex 5000 klingt er deutlich dynamischer als der Sennheiser Momentum 2, den ich austauschen will. Das sind soweit objektive Kriterien: Man stöpselt um und der eine ist einfach lauter und energiegeladener, als der andere. Subjektiv wäre es jetzt, sich zur Klangqualität zu äußern. Ich sag einfach nur: Er klingt toll. Akustikgitarre mit 12 Saiten, die lebendig aufspielten und brillant auseinander zu halten waren - was will man mehr? Becken, die lebendig klingen und wie echt hallen, nicht nur ein kurzes stumpfes "Pling". Man kann viel schreiben, aber man muss es ausprobieren, eben weil jedes Ohr anders ist. Und ja, er hält auch mit hochpreisigeren KH'n an der HiFi-Anlage mit, finde ich jedenfalls. Ich könnte jetzt hochpreisigere Vergleichsmodelle nennen, die ich vor 5 Jahren gekauft habe, aber die gibt es nicht mehr zu kaufen, also bringt es wenig bis gar nichts. Für eine HiEnd-Anlage der unteren Kategorie taugt er auch für höhere Ansprüche. Dafür gibt es ein 3 m langes Kabel ohne Mikro und 6,3mm-Klinkenadapter auf 3,5 mm Klinkenstecker. Mit den Kabeln - beiden - bin ich aber ein wenig unzufrieden. Es folgt Jammern auf hohem Niveau mit dem Hinweis, dass es auf der Website von Meze noch andere Kabel gibt, die man ersatzweise einsetzen kann. Bei den hochwertigen Kabeln muss man genau hinsehen, denn nicht jedes ist für den Einsatzzweck tauglich. Die mitgeliefertern Standardkabel kann man im Meze-Shop ersetzen und außerdem lässt sich ein 1,5m-Mikrofonkabel für 30 € ergänzend dazu kaufen - für alle, denen das 1,2m-Kabel zu kurz ist (wie für mich am PC, nicht aber am Smartphone). Für ein 3m-Kabel gibt es kein upgrade, was zeigt, dass der KH schwerpunktartig für mobile Einsatzzwecke konzipiert wurde. Hochwertige KH haben schwere stoffummantelte Kabel mit größerem Durchmesser, die gerade verlaufen. Der Meze wird neben dem 1,2 m-Kabel mit Mikro zusätzlich mit einem leichten Kabel (3 m) geliefert. Beide Kabel sind stoffummantelt ist bis zur Y-Weiche. Danach siend sie mit gutem Kunststoff ummantelt oder Gummi, was sinnvoll ist, denn der Kabelstoff reibt. Das ist am Bart(-stoppeln) mit entsprechenden Geräuchen verbunden. Außerdem wäre dieser Stoff auf der Gesichts- und Halshaut unangenehm. Aber das 3m-Kabel ist zu leicht, wird eng aufgewickelt geliefert und bleibt erst mal verdreht, wenn es abgewickelt und in die Länge gezogen ist. Auch das 1,2-m Kabel fällt nicht gerade - wie gesagt: Jammern auf hohem Niveau. In Gesamtheit bin ich begeistert. Für 300 € bekommt man aus Rumänien etwas, was in Westeuropa, Japan/China oder USA produziert viel mehr gekostet hätte. Gratulation an die osteuropäischen Nachbarn.

Simply put; these cans are not the best value if you only factor in sound fidelity but... As for outdoor, traveling and general consumer oriented purposes, I love them. The 99's are built like a tank while looking as refined and classy as they do. You can easily drive these from nearly any powered output, reacting very potent to additional amplification too, even if unnecessary. Sound is noticeably warm and rather wide, though not excessively dark. You can certainly call them 'coloured', in general terms. This can work quite well for bassy electronic music, largely due to compressed nature of this genre, less so for mud-sensitive genres (metal, indy, new-wave,...) Verdict: I wouldn't want any other set of cans for going about my day, more serious equipment awaits me when I return to my listening room. Satisfied!
