I am a complete newbie to any arts, crafts, hobbies or anything like this so I have to ask a stupid question.. are they able to be blended with water?

That is a reasonable question. I don't believe these can be blended with water. They are softer than a crayon and oil based. Once a picture is drawn, a person can rub with a finger or paper towel to blend colors together (smudging). Hope that helps.

how washable are these? hands, clothing, surfaces? appropriate for smaller children?

They come of of hands easy enough, however I wouldn't expect oil pastels to come out of clothing easily. My 12 year old loves working with them, but I don't think I would let my 6 year old use them.

ACMI seeks to create and maintain a positive environment for art, craft and other creative materials usage; to promote safety in these materials; and to serve as an information and service resource on such products. In these ways, ACMI provides leadership, guidance, and education to all to achieve greater participation in art, craft and other creative activities.How does a product get approved by ACMI?ACMI has a consulting toxicology team at Duke University's Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, who review the complete formulas of products in the certification program. In this evaluation, the toxicology team take into account:Each ingredient and its quantityPossible adverse interaction with other ingredientsThe product's size and packagingPotential acute and chronic harm to any part of the human bodyPossible allergic reactionHow a product is commonly used and misusedU. S. national and state labeling regulations.The Toxicologists must approve the formula of every color of every product and must approve every formula change. Safety is the only consideration. The toxicology team keeps informed of new scientific data on ingredients from government and private sources. Previously-approved ingredients have been banned and restrictions established when new developments have occurred. Cautionary labeling is required on products when appropriate. All products certified as non-toxic by ACMI are non-toxic for both children and adults because the Toxicologists base their evaluation on the use and misuse (such as ingesting a material) of the product by a small child. The decisions of the toxicology team are final, subject only to appeal by ACMI's Toxicological Advisory Board, which is composed of leading toxicological experts in the United States. These toxicologists act as a review board on issues of toxicity. They review the criteria used by ACMI's toxicology team and make recommendations to ACMI. Such products are certified by ACMI to be labeled in accordance with the chronic hazard labeling standard, ASTM D 4236, and the U. S. Labeling of Hazardous Art Materials Act (LHAMA). Additionally, products bearing the AP Seal with Performance Certification are certified to meet specific requirements of material, workmanship, working qualities, and color developed by ACMI and others through recognized standards organizations, such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Some products cannot attain this performance certification because no quality standard currently exists for certain types of products.Cl The CL Seal identifies products that are certified to be properly labeled in a program of toxicological evaluation by a medical expert for any known health risks and with information on the safe and proper use of these materials. What colors are included? I'm trying to decide on the 25 vs 50 set. Thanks! :)

I bought two sets, each for a different family so I don't have the specifics. However, I just checked on Amazon, the set of 50 is $5.99 and 25 is $4.29. I say definitely the 50 is a better buy and kids can't never have enough colors. Hope this helps.

Good value

Originally i bought them for event that people of all ages could enjoy doing collaboration art. Children really enjoyed the vibrant colours and many just did on the go amazing master pieces. I never really used pastels myself, but its nice experience and i really enjoyed the range of the colours. I wwould love to see more basic coulours more than one in the pack such as skin colours and white for blending. On down side, its breaking easily especially then paper cover removed. Dont know if thats the mature of the pastel. I have bought several packages for children to use and i see good value. These pastels invite children to draw.

Surprisingly good for the money

Really nice pastels. Easy to use and layer well. Blend easily. Really a pleasure to work with and great for anyone new to pastels. Surprisingly good for the price. Nice and creamy. I bought the 12 pack first to give them a go and then went for the full fifty. I'm very happy with the selection of colours. I would give them a five but they are very skinny compared to other makes but then they're cheap enough that you can replace them easily when needed. A really good buy.

Very good pastels

I love this pastels. They work very well and blend well too. They are it different than the more expensive ranges, but do very good job. I wouldn't bother about buying something more pricy, because this is sufficient enough. You can always go and buy odd ones to extend the range of colours.

A hit with 8 year old

Bought for my 8 year old son who is a huge fan of Art for Kids Hub on YouTube. He was delighted with these (exactly the same as the ones on YouTube!!) with a great array of colours. Great price too.

Good value for money.

In spite of having more expensive sets these are still the set I revert to time and time again. Although small they are easy to use and I like the results I get from using them. I think the price is excellent for the value and they are adequate for my needs as an amateur artist.

This came a couple of days early which is good and it came with no broken box or broken pastels and they look like they are good quality too! I recommend buying this!!

Like wax crayons!

Bought for an art class and thought thesewere good value for the number of colours in the pack. Howwever, they are quite hard and it is necessary to press down hard to get coverage. They do not blend well at all, and it took me back to childhood days, using those awful wax crayons. You probably have to pay more for the softer ones, but my experience has put me off oil pastels for a long time! Worth trying if you are not famiiar with this medium.

The pastels were shattered. I'm so disappointed. It was advertised as packaging damage. These are great products. After contacting Amazon they have given me a refund. I am thankful for this.

Great product, smooth and beautiful colors to start. But, its smell like gasoline, I don't know how can I explain it. The smell it's very strong. My advice is, open it for a few minutes, and then use them. You can get used to the smell. Used them in a good ventilation area. They are hard, and you can add details, that's why I gave them 5⭐️ because you can achieve beautiful results.
