Incredible machine! Fast, easy, and so much fun to use!
I echo everyone else who has purchased this in saying I wish I had purchased it sooner. Expensive, yes, but it is first class quality and will last for generations. The main unit is heavy, the cones are thick, everything is metal. The only plastic on the entire unit is the safety piece that folds over to protect your fingers when the food gets close to the cone. The top part of the unit comes off the base and the two pieces can be stored in a cupboard. It isn't that big when assembled, so I leave mine on the counter. It's a gleaming piece of equipment that anyone coming into your kitchen will admire! (and I guarantee, want to try!) As stated by many people, the booklet that comes with this is severely lacking in detail. So the fun of discovery begins! I received 5 cones and only 2 of them had a number on the bottom. From the pictures in the booklet I was able to figure out which cone was #1 etc. so I got out my labeler and put numbers on them myself. There were no pictures or even descriptions of what the cones did beyond saying "shredder" and "waffler" etc. Saying that "this cone makes great shredded cabbage" is not enough information for me. So I spent the better part of a morning doing my own research. I took potatoes, carrots, celery, and cabbage and tested each of them with every cone. All I can say is WOW!!! This machine does so much it is no wonder they didn't go into detail. They would have a book if they did. A video would have been great though! There are some videos on the web, but there is no substitute for testing everything yourself. You will be amazed, trust me! The reason this is so easy to turn is that the blades are extremely sharp. After you stop turning the handle you can reach inside the cone and scoop out any remaining food into your bowl. The blades are not on the inside of the cone. If after rinsing, some pieces of food are stuck in the little blades, you can use a soft kitchen brush to gently whisk them out. Dry the cones and you're done. I always hear that the biggest irritation with food processors is that food gets stuck between the blade and the unit and that they are a pain to take apart clean. NOT THIS! The cones hook onto the unit by holding the edge of the cone and gently turning clockwise to lock onto the post. A simple twist counter clockwise and the cone comes off. If you want to return to the "good old days" when things were "no-tech" simple to use, easy to clean and maintain, and very good quality, do not hesitate to get this. There is nothing to break, no motors to go out, and according to the people I talked to at this company, the blades never need sharpening. If for some reason they get dull many years from now, you can purchase another one on the Saladmaster website. They fit this machine. Slice, shred, waffle, french fry, get creative! You will really have fun with this!

Maxam Vegetable Chopper
My wife purchased this for my birthday and I actually love it. After our Black and Decker food processor of early 90's vintage died, we bought another B&D food processor. That was junk and the blade for it broke. I had to resort to grating blocks of cheese the old fashioned way, on a grater. That is tiresome and if you aren't careful, you'll be missing a few layers of skin off your knuckles. So upon opening the box, I was confronted with 5 stainless cutting cones and a nicely chromed, simple frame and crank. Not fancy to look at, but sometimes simple is better, waaay better. The cones have a number stamped in the end to correspond with their cutting specialty. They don't jump right out at you, you have to look closely, so if you are in a hurry it's kind of a pain. The cones are attached to the crank with a small twist onto "teeth". It is easy to put on and take off. This little baby makes short work of grating/shredding hard cheese like cheddar. It also really was fantastic at slicing through a stack of onions when we were making French Onion Soup. I barely had time to cry! (OK so I'm joking about that, but it was much faster than using a mandolin slicer. It made short work of shredding cabbage for cole slaw. The only item I've had trouble with is grinding fresh ginger since it is so fibrous. I imagine coconut would be the same, but I haven't tested that theory yet. The plastic pusher/holder at the top makes sure you keep your knuckles from getting scraped up. The feet have suction cups so that when you really get "cranking" it stays put. The suctions seems to work even on slightly textured Formica. I hand wash my cutting cones using a wash cloth, as it seems to have a lot more friction to remove food particles. Don't put them in the dishwasher, the detergent will dull the cutting blades. There aren't alot of parts that can break, like on an electric food processor. If you don't mind expending a little elbow grease, this item really blows any other processor away with the bonus of less parts to break, little noise and it takes up a small footprint in your cabinet when it's broken down. My only disappointment was that this little gem is made in China. I try to buy Made in USA when I can, but really I can't find a weak point in this item yet, it seems to be well made. No chintzy parts, but as it gets used more and more, perhaps I will find a weak point and I will update if and when that happens.

Incredible machine
Absolutely love this chopper. It comes with three suction cups which can help grip the table. You get 5 different cutting blades ("cones") as pictured above, which are really easy to change. The manual gives a few examples on what each blade is good for (what vegetables to cut with what blade). I have so far used only 2 of the 5 blades when making sauerkraut and I can say this is an incredible machine. I went through a whole cabbage like a hot knife through butter (cut the cabbage in 4 quarters first). I then used another blade to cut up carrots. It is fast and smooth. The crank is easily operated and well lubricated. Basically a pleasure to use. The machine is well constructed and feels solid. The bottom part of the machine (the one with the legs) comes off for more convenient storage. The fact that there is no loud engine makes this machine usable at all hours of the day, which can be a bonus some people. Cleanup is very easy. For the negatives, I can only think of two: 1. The plastic finger guard. It seems flimsy but even if it ever fails you can use the machine without it. I WISH it was metal. It doesn't show any signs of failure but on a machine this well constructed I would not have minded paying another 20 bucks to get a metal finger guard. This is just my nitpicking because like I mentioned it works and has not shown any signs of failing. 2. Potential vegetable waste. When you get to the end of chopping vegetables, there is a size that is too thin and the chopper can't chop it. You can see in the picture that the finger guard floats over the blade. When your vegetable reaches that thickness, it can no longer be cut. At this point you can two options: 1. Throw it out. 2. Very slowly run the crank while manually pressing and spinning that piece yourself with the other hand. This can be tedious and the waste is not big but be aware of this. That's it. The above negatives are nothing more than nitpicks but you all should be aware of this. I would not deduct any stars from the machine over any of the negatives listed above as overall I love this machine and how it works. I highly recommend this to anyone who needs to chop vegetables. 5/5 Stars.

CAUTION!
We (wife and I) got our Maxam Vegetable Chopper in the same bundle as the cookbook and Maxam 17pc Waterless cookware. First off, this is very sharp and easy to use. Did I say sharp? I mean extremely sharp! So, CAUTION cannot be overstated. This is very much like a chopper my grandmother had back in the 1950's, with an improved design. It is also a specialty item because it gives you those grates, chops, and slices that you cant get with Food Processors, or Veg-I-matic style choppers. This machine does perfect potato chip cuts (smooth and crinkle). It makes quick work of HARD foods and can zest an orange in seconds. Also, it's great for hard cheeses, making coleslaw, etc. My wife and I LOVE this chopper ... But, there is a drawback that forced me to eliminate a star. All the following cautions center on the same draw back ... º DO NOT let children under the age of 13 use this item. I slivered a very slim layer of the tip of a finger and I thought I was taking precautions. The error was MY FAULT and not the products. º Use Thimbles, or Shark Gloves to protect your fingertips. º Leave enough product as a cushion and/or to use in different recipes ... Potato Skins are a good example. º Wash blades by hand and dry immediately. Treat them as though they are high quality Chef knives. º Make sure you press down on the chopper to gain adequate suction to hold the chopper stationary This device is superb at what it is designed to do, but there is no room for user error. I highly recommend this chopper for any serious cook.

Excellent quality product
I purchased this product back in 2017. I love it and use it regularly each week. It's an excellent quality product and easy to use. Treat it with some care and expect it to last a long time. I bought a second as a gift for my daughter in 2018 when I found one for sale in Amazon's warehouse deals. The only thing I don't like is the real estate it takes up on the counter, but I reach for it often enough that it's justified. It's easy to clean. I always rinse the blade and often put it in the dishwasher (maybe not the best idea, but that's the way I roll).

Great product at a great price
I really like this product. It works better than a standard food processor and does more slicing and dicing functions without needing to buy additional attachments. It cleans up in a snap. I'm sure to continue to use my food processor for making hummus and falafel, which this chopper can't do, but for making kraut, cole slaw, fries, etc., this is great. Along with my spiralizer, which makes the best zucchini noodles ever, and my blender, which makes great smoothies and blended salads, I feel that my tool kit is pretty much complete. Don't pay attention to the bad reviews, they are probably outliers or the result of misuse of the chopper. The only thing that I could complain about is that the suction cups leave small marks on my counter top, but these are removed easily with cleaning.

Excellent quality
I absolutely love this vegetable/cheese chopper. I've mostly made sweet potato fries and chips, but also a few other items including grating parmesan cheese. Really couldn't be happier. It's attaches to the counter easily and firmly. Clean up is a cinch! (Believe me, that's important) The entire thing is very well made and easy assemble, unassemble, and use. The blades are very sharp and the hopper is easy to implement. Really, what more can you ask for? I had a black & decker slicer, shredder, and chopper. I avoided using it because it was extremely noisy (painfully loud), it was a pain to assemble & unassemble. Food was always getting caught in it and was difficult to clean a little nook by the hopper (yuck!). This manual chopper outperforms the machine processor all the way. I can do more with it, without my ear drums bleeding, and clean up takes just a fraction of the time. I really wish I would have had this years ago!

Not as good as I'd hoped
I bought this after watching a Salad Master presentation and being very impressed with their cutting machine, which was basically identical to this Maxam one. It works pretty well, but all the holes in the cutting cups are too small and make slices that are too small. I was hoping for larger ones so that I could slice into bigger slices, but maybe that's just me. I wish also wish it was easier to chop lettuce with.
