At 16, Justine is a brilliant, promising student and a strict vegetarian. But when she starts veterinary school, she quickly encounters a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world. Desperate to fit in during the first week of hazing rituals, she strays from her principles and eats raw meat for the first time and faces the terrible and unexpected consequences of her actions as her true self emerges. Review: Awesome flick...not just a twisted horror movie - Saw this in the city (NY) the morning it came out and it did not disappoint. Even with the shock hype. I've seen every horror film there is so very few movies are that good to hit a nerve in me, but this was one that worked! I guess I'd call it disturbing, but in a good way if that makes any sense. Don't get me wrong I wasn't affected the way some of these people at the premiere were affected (supposedly, because I kind of find it hard to believe that people fainted and vomited, but that's the word) but as the story progressed and some of the scenes played out (one scene/revelation near the end in particular) I was taken aback momentarily. More than any particular scene though I think it was the overall affect the movie had on me. Plus it's smart and well executed. It speaks to larger themes of conformity, sibling rivalry and the emotional and psychological commitment siblings have with one another (to varying degrees). The shock element is there, but as the other reviewer here said this isn't quite a horror movie (well maybe it is). The "thing" (don't want to spoil it) is merely a hook, but it's a good hook. This is a movie about trying to adjust to a foreign environment when you're really just a kid trying to fit in and find your way. When you're away from home and lonely and still emotionally and sexually immature from a psychological perspective and not ready to handle it all but can't resist those urges. You want and really need to satisfy those sexual urges, it's part of life, but it's not easy because you don't quite know your way. The film is a horrific metaphor for it all yet also works as a horror movie. It's one of the most original movies I've seen. Don't worry you won't faint or vomit. I promise. Review: Metaphoric, atmospheric, incredible lead actress! - I speak fluent French so was able to fully immerse myself and leave subtitles out of the way. I am glad, because I came out of it only wanting to watch it again and not miss a thing. I adored the performance of the lead actress and completely felt and believed her journey. She is entirely committed to this role and so adeptly conveys every piece of it... I saw this as a metaphor story more than a literal one, and appreciated the use of symbolism, which compelled me throughout. The only part I found mildly displeasing was the performance of the older sister. I felt she was very "in your face" and could have pulled back some. It would have made her "fit" better in the story for me. She overdid it IMO... Like ok, you are _________ we get it, I don't need to be hit over the head with it. Otherwise, beautifully done, thought provoking for sure, satisfying to the end... Good to the last bite.

This movie is excellent, in darn near every way possible
My review is going to come as no surprise to (most) those whom have seen this film. This movie is excellent, in darn near every way possible. It is well acted, shot, written, paced... I could go on. The greatest thing that I liked about this film is how it so effectively pulled me into the story, rather then going the way of "oh shes a vampire, or a ghoul or some such" it keeps it very very un specific, except for her budding habit of "eating Raw Meat". So as the story develops and grows, I found myself saying and wondering what the heck is going on, and asking myself "Why is this character like this." In a film market today, saturate with mediocre thrillers and horrors, this movie is a one gem which shines brightly in a sea of potatoes. If you are a fan of thriller/horrors at all you really need to see this movie.

Very well made coming of age movie about two cannibalistic sisters
This is a hard movie for me to rate. I see lots of glowing reviews on Amazon and I don’t necessarily disagree with them. It is well made, well cast, well-acted, photography is first rate and is sometimes quite beautiful, the lead Garance Marillier (playing the character Justine) is compelling, it is one of those horror films that also has powerful messages about life in general (at times it is an effective coming of age film), the movie certainly makes me feel horror, producing a reaction in me and not just from the effects (which are good) but from how well grounded and believable the film is, producing not “oh vampires aren’t real” type horror, which will always have an element of removal for me, an awareness that I am suspending disbelief. Rather, it is one of those horror movies that feels very much like it could happen, that nothing supernatural or physics defying need happen and it is a slow slide from the life of a very relatable and sympathetic person to the life of someone truly horrifying (but not necessarily evil). The movie is in a nutshell the story of Justine, off to veterinary school, joining her older upper classman sister Alexia (played Ella Rumpf). The two sisters are somewhat distant, not enemies but certainly not friends, and at first we are caught up in the drama of Justine experiencing being away from home for the first time, college hazing rituals, being in classes where the students work on horses and cows, making new friends (Justine has problems with this, but she does befriend her gay male roommate Adrien, played by Rabah Naït Oufella), with just one of the elements being Justine is from a family of strict vegetarians, no meat allowed and indeed meat seems to make Justine quite sick. The movie feels real, grounded, relatable, whether it is dealing with hazing or a heavy classwork load or the complicated relationship with Alexia. Only things don’t stay confined to lab work and familial relationships. Justine gets weird, itchy, skin-peeling rashes after being forced to eat some meat as part of a hazing ritual (something that apparently does not faze her sister one bit to Justine’s surprise) and then starts to crave meat. Raw meat. Very raw meat. The first meat we see her voluntarily eating is raw chicken breasts straight out of the refrigerator late one night but it doesn’t stop there. Turns out the two sisters have a heavy-duty cannibal streak in them. Buried and just emerging in Justine, already very much out for Alexia. Alexia has no moral qualms about indulging in cannibalism, but Justine at first seems to still balk at going all the way and still feels a sense of right and wrong. The movie can be quite uncomfortable to watch, with not just the discomfort of what you see on the screen, but the buildup, the anticipation of what you know or suspect is coming in a scene. When cannibalism does occur it is bloody, gory, very physical, but believably so. No fountains of blood but not sanitized either, almost clinical and grounded. At times the film made me very very squeamish and I hit the 10 second fast forward option a few times to get out of some scenes. It is super rare for a horror movie to affect me that way. I don’t think I necessarily enjoyed the film, but I will give it a fairly high rating as it is so well made, written, cast, and acted. It is superb work.

Amazing coming of age film. Isn’t quite what I expected after seeing that it had caused people to pass out and vomit while watching as even though the gore is very realistic and grisly, it isn’t frequent. Overall, and amazing film. Would recommend to anyone who is a fan of great storytelling.
