A Matter of Time

It was wonderful to see this movie in its original ratio and cinema sound. I haven't seen it this way since I saw it at Radio City Music Hall when it originally opened. It actually was better than I remember. Ingrid Bergman was excellent in her role. Too bad it did not have any out-takes or extra footage added.

Terrific performance by Liza Minnelli. Important view of life as we age. Underrated film.

Unbelievably jaw droppingly awful film. Vincente Minnelli was in poor health during production, and it shows. So many talents wasted. The acting is amateurish, stilted, yet over the top. Worst of all, it appears to have been shot without synch sound. Every scene is distractingly dubbed, robbing the actors of anything resembling a genuine performance. It’s almost a home movie. The sound effects sound like they were recorded by children playing with toys on a tabletop. The cheap looking sets and costumes are gaudy and uninspired. Whoever was responsible for the make up and wigs should be executed for bad taste. Ghastly cadaverous white faces with grey contouring, smeary eyed, and orange/red lips. Ingrid Bergman should have sued for defamation. The photography, by Academy Award winning Geoffrey Unsworth, is so unflattering and so filtered it strains the eye to focus on anything. Even the songs by Kander and Ebb are dreary. The ideas behind the film could have made for a charming fantasy, but it absolutely falls flat. Even the pacing and editing are jarring and all wrong. You might think it could be interesting just to see how bad it gets, but it’s so overwhelmingly boring it becomes a death march to the finale. Wow. Everyone involved deserved better. I’m glad smaller films have been given new life on blu ray. The new widescreen transfer can’t be faulted. It’s well done, and looks as good as it could, considering the questionable material. Fans of the artists beware. For completists only.

This is a pan-and-scan rip-off. The movie's a mess, but not this big a mess. A 16 millimeter print transferred to super-eight. You could go blind trying to find a clear image.

we purchased this old movie knowing it was in bygone form,but it is not really an enjoyable one to view because it hops all over and the character development suffers because the actors never get a good chance to make a story you can follow.

Nice to see another less well known film in which Liza Minnelli is starring, especially with a bobed hairstyle, a little different to her usual styles.
