McGraw-Hill Education Intermediate Spanish Grammar

Bite sized lessons that really help you learn key grammar fast. I'm at a point in my Spanish learning where I'm really trying to improve my grammar. I also have a really busy job and family life, so don't have a ton of time. This textbook makes it easy to learn, with a lesson on one page and exercises on the second page -- and really has helped me learn (sometimes re-learn!) grammar in a really effective way. If you're struggling with grammar, this is a great book. Note that it's all in Spanish, but if you're at an intermediate level, this will be good for you (sometimes I have to look up words in the lessons, but that's a good thing).

It's excellent for studying

Utilize this book, like the three part Japanese series "a dictionary of (basic/intermediate/advanced) Japanese grammar." This book is part of a larger work... Therefore, to get the most out of it - i.e. more examples and practice exercise - you need to purchase all three books! Book 1 (beginner) is just that - an introduction to basic grammar. Book 2 (intermediate) builds upon info from book 1 by providing additional grammar points, context, and supplementary exercises. Book 3 (advanced) partially reviews books 1 and 2 with some new grammar points but adds in nuances and subtext to previous grammar points that nearly native speakers (C1) would appreciate and provides more opportunities to understand and practice the new information through the exercises. Although it is heavily based on Spanish from Spain, it is an excellent reference for progressively learning the language if you work thru all 3 books! I have provided an example grammar point in the photos referencing the "definite article" section from each of the books.

Great book, fun to do the exercises

As an intermediate Spanish learner, I've used a lot of workbooks, especially those from McGraw-Hill. The appealing aspects of this book is that each lesson is a 2-page exposition and set of questions/drills on a topic, so you can study in small bites if that suits your schedule. The lessons get into higher-level aspects of grammar that I'd not come across in other textbooks and which would be helpful for obtaining better reading comprehension. This book uses the Vosotros as well as the Tu and Usted verb conjugations, which many textbooks oriented towards North American audiences do not. However, some of the explanations, which are largely in Spanish, weren't as clear as they might be (although the cartoons helped). Also, the text appeared to have some proofreading and typesetting errors - if your Spanish is reasonable, you'll catch them, otherwise you might get confused (it would be nice of the publisher posted a list of corrections). This would be recommended for advanced intermediate learners who want to keep refining their grasp of grammar and prepare for more advanced topics. But for a general introduction to intermediate level Spanish, there are probably more straight-forward approaches, such as some of the McGraw-Hill Practice Makes Perfect series books.

I started with zero Spanish and I've worked myself up by using Apps, Spanish podcasts, etc., and working in a healthcare clinic in a Latino area. I am now a solid intermediate, and this book is perfectly leveled for me. As others have mentioned, all the explanations are in Spanish. I always keep my computer open next to me with Google Translate up, because there's a ton of vocabulary that I don't have memorized (although if you took Spanish in school, you probably would-- animals, fruits, types of machines). Once I figure out the nouns that are being used, the grammar explanations are very clear. I love having short exercises to do after each lesson. Each lesson is one page, so it's perfect for 15 minute sessions.

This book tackles a different topic on every two pages. In theory it is good. On the left page, it has a review of the topic ranging from very simple masculine/feminine to higher language forms that are challenging. On the right hand side, there is a page of practice problems. Everything is in Spanish. The reason for the low rating is that the review information is fairly limited, and there is only one page of practice. Also they have crammed the answers into compact paragraphs in the back of the book, that are a pain to check. I am a B1-B2 level learner. This is not my favorite text, though I do find the occasional nugget of information. It is useful and has good information, just not as good for me as the Practice Makes Perfect series. This book might great in a classroom setting.

I think for an intermediate grammar book it was confusing as it had no English at all and the glossary/dictionary at the end was not very comprehensive. Much prefer the Practice Makes Perfect series by Dorothy Richmond. Happily, my instructor agreed and the class has gone back to that.
