Recommended Volume Control At A Great Price
Works fine. And At a great price. Like the shorter cable for easier access to the volume control. Use for streaming videos. Will buy some more for backups because these are difficult to find at a decent price.

Good value / works!
Works as advertised. Compact adapter to give the extra volume control needed when the OS won't.

Reduced volume of my arcade cabinet
I bought this to use with an Arcade1up Deluxe arcade cabinet. The lowest volume on the speakers was still just way too loud, so I inserted this on the 3.5mm jack on the machine where the speakers plugged in. Setting the volume on my arcade machine to 1, I played with the volume on the cable until it felt like it was loud enough without being inaudible. Now when I raise the volume on the cabinet louder it's more comfortable to listen to. This is a passive device so it will not boost your sound or make it louder as there is no power going into it. If anything you might notice your sound will not be as loud as it was without using this plug. But for me that was the point. Otherwise seems to work perfect so far. Quick Update: After playing with my arcade cabinet with this cable attached I noticed the sound a little off on some games. I narrowed it down to just the right speaker working. It had nothing to do with this cable, but instead the audio cable that comes included with the Arcade1up speakers. I didn't realize it, but they use a TRRS male plug and this cable is only TRS. So that's why the sound is forced to just the right speaker. I will try a TRRS plug and see if that solves the problem. Otherwise this plug is still working fine.

Needs some fixing, but it works with few alternatives out there.
*Update* - Well one of these bit the dust. Not entirely without cause due to it getting snagged on a chair handle. Just completely stopped working after that. Down to one now. I will say they do get awfully crackly and need deoxit after an unusually short amount of time. A lot of bad reviews for this product, but there's not any alternatives I can find, at least that are this cheap. I needed a short male to female 3.5mm volume control to use with a little Bluetooth receiver, that I plug earbuds into, that I connect to my iPhone. For whatever reason the lowest volume I can set on the phone / Bluetooth doesn't get low enough (for me) at night, so that's where this thing comes in. It works fine, gets the volume down nice and low, connections feel fine, I don't notice any looseness, the volume wheel doesn't make any scratchy noises or anything, and the cable itself seems to introduce no extra noise. The one thing I see people complain about are bad connections where the wires go into the knob at the center of the cable. I agree that these points do not feel solid at all, and in fact could easily be moved around by hand right out of the box. I definitely can see how with any decent amount of stress these wires could rip out. My solution was to just brush a tiny bit of super glue around that connection area, on both sides, and now it feels solid. Yes, this should not have to be done, it's poor engineering, but for as cheap as this thing is, and due to the lack of alternatives, it is what it is. I'll knock a star off for that, but unless something else goes wrong these things seem fine to me. Edit: well the volume wheels got super scratchy after a couple months and the sound would cut out in one ear or the other. A little contact cleaner fixed it, but kind of annoying.

they work so buy them
Inserted in the headphone path and it works well. Zero documentation or paperwork. Very clean volume change, no static. Has total off which is nice. Full on seems to pass through the full signal or darn close. The volume knob is intuitive and easy to use and has a nice range. I picked the shortest length as I wanted it to just do volume and not provide length, this way I can find the volume wheel quickly by running my hand along the wire. Good product. Bought pair and both work.

No Adjustment
These adapters were just what I needed, however they did not work. I have a Bluetooth adapter that I hooked up to my stereo in my home that only plays at full volume. I bought these for a cheap fix so I could at least manually lower the output volume. When I went to use these, there was no noticeable volume variation until I turned the scroll wheel to "off". Then it shut the sound off completely. I even plugged both together in series, which did nothing but turn it on and off. These are too cheap to be worth returning. Please buy something a little more expensive that does what it is supposed to do.

90% Useless for Volume: Dial pot is LINEAR, NOT LOG!
These cables are NOT designed to control volume: The dial pot's resistance is LINEAR, NOT LOGARITHMIC. For volume, this means ~90% of the dial does nothing until the final 1-2mm, which sharply fades down into silence. The result is a frustrating hair-trigger "sweet spot" that makes reaching an intended volume level feel like cracking a safe—dial a whisker too far in either direction and you get full-strength noise or utter silence. Before I bought this, I noticed one of the promotional images for this cable claiming "Dial type for easy fine adjustment!" This might be true for adjusting some non-logarithmic analogue signal, but I'm not sure what that would be on a 3.5mm TRS cable. The closest I can think of is maybe patch cables on a modular synth, but as far as I know those don't need TRS cables. So what this dial on this particular cable is actually good for is a mystery. For audio volume, though: it makes a better on/off button than a dial. UPDATE: After reading other reviews, I bought a second order. These use log instead of linear pots, and work perfectly for volume—just be aware that there's no way to tell ahead of time which one you'll get

I haven't used these extensively, but I feel I can report that they do not change the sound quality. I notice a slight change in volume when I first add them into the headphone line, but so far, I have had no problem getting the volume high enough (or low enough). The connections are good and tight. I used them on an airplane with my laptop and my cell phone and was satisfied with both.

Excellent Volume adjustment.

Nothing fancy about these tables. Convenient length, not too long, proper thickness. The plug is narrow enough to fit through the headphone opening of most phone cases. Full volume is indeed full volume, and the minimum volume is fully off, unlike some cheaper brands. The left-right balance seems to stay correct at all ranges of volume. Another thing to check for is whether the cable is wired backwards, either by left-right or by polarity. Fortunately both of these cables were wired properly. And they come in a nice little tiny box.

I use this volume controller for my portable cd player. The reason I purchased this product is because I'm not able to adjust volume on my cd player to the level of my satisfaction. Either the volume between preprogrammed levels ( digital ) is too high or too low for me. These gaps are too wide. This device solves the problem. It's analog volume controller, the one I always liked. It works great and for the good price plus you get 2 of them. Quality of this product seems to be looking good too.The only problem I have is that I'm unable to use features which came with my ear buds like: pause, play, forward or rewind the songs. I guess it's about the difference between 3 ring plug on my earbuds versus 2 ring plug on this device just like they come with the other similar devices on the market. Precise volume level is priority for me though.

These things don't last forever. Have yet to get more than two years out of one before they wear out. But the two pack was so cheap that it was silly not to replace the one that just died. This one has a nice taper, from off to full-on. If I get two years out of this one, I good for four years.
