Beautifully produced but text is a bit American
...which is fine if you're an American reader! :-) As a British reader, I did find the Americanisms in the narrative a bit intrusive (obviously I'm less bothered by those in the dialogue, because the English language version of the film was US-produced). Otherwise, this is perfect - my son is in love with the film and with Ponyo herself, and the book takes you back into the world of the film effortlessly. There is a richness of stills and frames from the film, and they're displayed inventively, giving it the feel of a graphic novel. One thing that might disappoint a die-hard fan of the film - Sosuke's mother, Lisa, has a very human and understandable strop in the film, when her husband fails to return as expected. This is almost entirely left out of the book - no grabbing a beer, no sulking, no getting Sosuke to signal 'Bug Off!' at his dad. Presumably to protect the tender sensibilities of children, but given that it's in the film, I think it's a shame it was censored from the book of the film. For that reason, and because the American narrative irritates me, 4 stars rather than 5.
