I own a 1977 corvette. I have a clunking sound coming from my rear end occasionally not always. Some one suggested this? what was your issue(s)????

It was my '87 Trans Am. It started some years ago...when I was backing out of the driveway it made a horrible noise, particularly when turning. Its been so long ago I can't recall if it did have the same problem going forwards. As a last resort (I didn't think it would work) I put some in and the noise was gone. I also have an '89 Trans Am that I restored. It also makes a little noise and this is the car that I bought it for, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Over the years I created a large library of books and magazines and everyone says to use Delco. You said '77 Corvette? My big project is a '74 that has sat around for years and been neglected. I've read every restoration book there is to better my knowledge. That being said, one the most important and must have reference is a DVD created by (Yogi) Bair's parts and service company. Its called: 'Bair's 100 point check-up' and covers their many experiences throughout the years in their shop. To the point (and I have never read this anywhere, not even the shop manual) a places of concern are the rear end side yokes. Over time they can wear, creating slack in the differential housing. Their method of checking for this problem is to wedge a 2x4 under each wheel and lift. If you see the yoke move back and forwards more than just a little, you have problems. In my case the car is sitting on 6x6s on my lift and when I tried the 2x4 method the whole back end of the car would come up. I removed the half shafts and found that the right side yoke was fine but the left was really loose. Upon removing the rear differential I discovered that the c-clip was broken into pieces and that the end of the yoke had been peened against an internal shaft and not allowing me to remove it. To make a long story short, I took the rear to a local Corvette shop where the yoke was replaced and gear oil and Delco additive were added. The DVD is an hour long and everyone should have it. After all that being said, I don't know if this would cause the noise or not. With the car on the ground, I'm thinking that 2x4 method would work and possibly give you piece of mind.Good luck,Alan

If you’re asking about outing it in the axle of your automatic transmission vehicle, yes you can. It is for the limited slip differential which your car came with.

Did they change the chemistry lately, smells different, and mixed into 2 quarts of Valvoline GL5, my posi is crunching off stop in turns.

I have used the same AC Delco limited slip lubricant twice in the past three years on my 1970 Nova with 4.11 gears and posi rear differential. I did not notice any changes in the product however, the old fishy scent from other similar products I have used in the past was not as prominent. Furthermore, I completely drained my differential by removing the cover instead of just draining the old gear oil through the fill/drain plug. I used Lucas Oil (LUC10043 80W-90) heavy duty gear oil when refilling the differential. The Lucas product is supposed to meet or exceed GL5 oil and did not notice any grinding after the service was completed. I am assuming you completely drained your axle if not, mixing different GL gear oils can possibly cause problems. Sorry for the long reply and best of luck with your project!
