Kaufman Constructs Trading Systems

I had high expectations of a new book from Perry Kaufman, but if anything he exceeded those expectations. Trading strategy development, is a dry topic (even if you enjoy it) and is unavoidably statistical in nature. This makes most of the other books on this subject (and I have almost all of them), a heavy read. But somehow Mr.Kaufman writes books that are incredibly detailed yet easy to read. If you only buy one book on trading strategies, it should be this one.

I wish I had this book when I started learning about creating systems. The author lays everything out step by step on how to create a trading system. He gives information on what works and what doesn't from his experience. For example, it took me a long time to recognize that shorting does not work in stock indices and he mentions about it and also gives the reason (too much noise). One of the important aspects for success in trading is picking the best stocks or futures and his chapter on picking the stocks/futures based on past performance shows how one can not only create a type of system but also have a systematic approach to picking the right instrument. Another concept that he mentions is equal opportunity trading. This is where you are spreading the risk equally among different positions. His chapter (Chapter 23) on constructing a trend system lays our how to create a trend following system. Perry Kaufman has really done a great service to system traders by writing this book. The fact he has a ton of experience stands up in this easy read.

Read this book, this guy is a consultant for hedge funds and is literally a rocket scientist, he knows what trading is.

I read many books on the subject. Nothing comes even close to the level of details and honesty this book offers. It is a true step-by-step guide by a trader who obviously knows what he is talking about and appreciates the elegance and the power of simplicity that is required to build robust systems. This book far exceeded my expectation and in my opinion it definitely worth a high place in my library.
