If you are looking for a trash can to hold standard 13-gallon trash bags, choose the 8-gallon sized model. It is much closer in size to a "kitchen" trash can than the larger model that says it can hold 13-gallon bags (which is only marginally true, as the container is so large that the bags don't touch bottom and must be stretched taut to fit the rim.) Plus, the 13-gallon one is a monster for most kitchens (note the dimensions). That said, this is worth every penny! We wanted a well-made, attractive, lidded, pest-proof, odor-containing kitchen trash can, and this is is. It opens with your foot, closes without slamming, has a lid that fits well, doesn't scoot back when your foot is on the pedal, and can be cleaned with a cloth. The liner can be removed for sanitization (it would be perfect for diapers). If it seems expensive, ask: how much will this cost per use? If you use it every day and it lasts years, the cost is infinitesimally tiny. Don't waste your $ on plastic or on poorly designed stainless bins. Buy this.

I have had several *other* trash cans and they always break in the long run. They are not built to handle the day in and day out usage, even in the kitchen of a single person like myself. I don't cook much either. My last one lasted a few years. I decided to upgrade to something that would last much longer. I have never looked back. This trash can is great. The liner is heavy and fits trash bags perfectly, no problems getting a tall kitchen bag stuck or having to figure out how to avoid closing it on the extra material in the bag or worse, having to buy custom bags. This is designed for 30,000 opens and closes and it works fantastically. I would highly recommend. Update: Years later this trashcan is still going strong!

This unit has a sort of piston cylinder in the lower back that lowers the lid slowly. After 9 months, this stopped working. It got jammed. I cannot seem to figure out how to get it to work again. It's stuck open. (Not great when you have dogs!) I contacted Rubbermaid since it was still under warranty, and they did not respond AT ALL! What's the point of a warranty if you don't respond to warranty claims, Rubbermaid!!?!? So much for commercial-grade actually MEANING something.
