Overall good headset for the price, especially for full face helmets
Good, functional headset with one moderate draw back.Pros:-Unlike other headsets I've tried, the microphone and speaker on this model stay in place very well, particularly when taking the headset on and off. I don't have to worry about them coming out even when I'm throwing the helmet around.-The controls are very responsive, and pretty easy to use/manipulate. Set up can be a little confusing because there's only 2 buttons, but once you get it out of the way you don't have to worry about it.-From what I'm told, the voice quality when making BT calls is very clear. I was going about 40 mph on a call with my visor open and my girlfriend said it sounded like I was inside my houseCons:-Biggest and pretty much only complaint is that when connected to BT I get a weird and annoying static sound. From what I've seen, this is fairly common among these headsets, and there's not much you can do about it. It's hard to explain, but it sounds like a radio interference noise coming through the speakers. If you disconnect from BT, the problem seems to go away, so I believe it to be the BT signal interfering with the headset wiring (insulation not thick enough, most likely) + Here's the thing about this static; it tends to go away (for the most part) after my phone connects to BT. It may come back very faintly at times, but if I'm riding and listening to music, talking with my passenger, or on the phone, I can't really hear it over the noise of my bike or wind anyway (Triumph Tiger 800; not a loud bike at all comparatively). I'm going to call Sena customer service and see if they have any recommendations.-No FM Radio, you can pay a little more to get it in the same model, but I figured that blindly scrolling through FM stations would probably be more trouble than it's worth, and I can just stick with iHeart Radio.Overall, the reliability of this unit plus the ease of use is enough to make me look past the static that I get occasionally. This is definitely a lower end Sena model, but for the money it's not a bad deal for a name brand product like this.UPDATE:Originally I reported that a drawback of this headset was that the BT produced some static. After doing the latest firmware update (another pro to these headsets), the static has reduced immensely. I can still hear it faintly when my headset first connects to my phone via BT, but it goes away and is practically unnoticeable after a few seconds.

Finaly, a headset that works well!
I have had this head set for a few weeks now. It works well. The controls are simple and easy to use. There is a "jog wheel" that you can also press. And there is a second button on the back of the unit. It is easy to feel the controls with thick gloves. Installing on my helmets was easy. All the necessary hardware is included.Pairing with my Windows 7 phone was the easiest ever. I press the jog wheel for a second, and I can give my phone a voice command - very nice! This allows me to call up anyone, send texts, choose music, etc...I have a noisy helmet. Even at high speeds, there is enough volume to hear anything. The person on the other end of a phone call can understand me easily at high speeds. Music is crisp and clear.Almost every command has vocal feedback. When you turn the unit on, it says, "hello" After a moment, it says, "phone connected" So you don't have to sit there counting seconds to know when to release a button. It came with a USB charging cable, but no USB to Wall Outlet adaptor (very easy to find, though). With thick gloves, the wheel will slip when I try to turn it.I know I was confused with the different model numbers. So, this is what I think:The SMH is a base part number. I think the 5 is older, the 10 is newer. Best I can figure, 10 has a longer Helmet - to - Helmet range. The D is for full faced helmet. You can order units with different types of boom mics.So far, this has been an excellent unit, and I would recommend it.

Great Communicators for the Money
My wife rides as a passenger on my bikes. We use full face helmets. We've had no problems with communication whether we are on our touring bike with big fairing and windshield, or on one of the smaller bikes with no windshield. Volume can be set loud enough to hear no matter the situation, we typically have it set on the lower end of the scale. Voice comes across clear enough that we never have trouble understanding what the other is saying. Range on the SMH5 models is claimed to be about 1/4 mile (SMH10 is about 1/2 mile), which is well more than enough for a rider and passenger.Pairing the headsets with our phones is easy and fast. And once set up once, it will pair automatically each time after that, unless you turn the feature off. This works great for me, as I can now ride while on-call for work, and never fear missing an important call. Pairing the two headsets is equally as easy. And you hear a voice tell you that it has happened, which is a nice reassurance. You'll want to keep handy the quick setup guide that comes with the headsets. Setup is not overly confusing, but setting up the different features requires pressing different patterns of buttons. Super easy, but not easy to remember which is which, sometimes.Battery life has been good. We've taken 12 hour long day rides and still had communication at the end of the day. The only complaint I have with the set is when the battery does go dead, sometimes you know it, sometimes you don't. We've intentionally not charged them over a few rides to see how long they last. When mine went dead, it warned me of low battery and then went dead less than a minute later. Not much notice. My wife's headset never warned her. It just went dead, leaving us talking to ourselves for a bit before realizing the other was not hearing us. The nice thing is recharge is done with a micro-USB cable, so they can be charged easily via wall jack or 12v outlet on your bike with the proper equipment. If you use a non-iPhone cellphone, you likely have everything you need already.Overall, for the money, I would certainly buy these again. In our situation, I think I might like the VOX feature of the SMH10. But they are quite a bit more money than the SMH5, and the SMH5 does everything we need.

Excellent
Purchased this after quite a bit of research, I wanted comms with a pillion, the ability to answer my phone whilst on the move and lastly the ability to listen to a bit of music whilst riding. This piece of kit achieved all three to varying degreesFirstly the intercom function is excellent - good clear comms with the pillion, obviously the clarity diminishes as speeds go up , but at motorway speeds , it was clear and legible - brilliantPhone picked up easily and nice and clearMusic again good but just background music at higher speeds, 50mph tops for decent audioIt was very easy to set up - took a matter of minutes - difficulty will be dependant upon your helmet rather than the kitBattery life was excellent - one full charge , lead to a seven hour ride where my pillion and I were continually chatting and still plenty of life left in the batteryThe instruction leaflet on how to operate was not very clear and it took a little bit of time to work out the various functions but this will come with time.I'm sure the smh10 is better but , this piece of kit is excellent and does the job very well, you need to decide what you want it for - if it's for pillion comms, then this gets five stars and I would highly recommend it. It gets four stars only because of instructions and price ( it's a lot of money)This is the first intercom I've bought so can't make comparison , I can only say that I am very very happy with the productI ordered the full face helmet kit by mistake, rather than replace I ordered a couple of miss for the flip face, this will allow me to use either kind of helmet in the future - swapping the kit from helmets should take about ten minutes for two helmetsGood product - buy with confidence
