I read the first part on the book which explains the training approach and why it works. I will likely read the rest of the book at some future point. I am a 63 year old man who has been athletic all of my life, and ran 18 marathons in my 20s having trained mainly using the LSD ( long, slow distance) method. The Maffetone Method is, to me, reminiscent of LSD, but with much better scientific explanations to back it up and some very convincing stories that demonstrates that it works. I am no longer a distance runner because I know first hand the wear and tear it inflicts on my joints from the constant pounding on hard surfaces. Today, I am a Skiker ( www.skike.com) because I can obtain all of the benefits of cross country skiing without the joint trauma and enjoy my outings far more. I currently Skike with the Maffetone system and, after 3 months of this method, I have noticed excellent progress in the pace that I can sustain at mt target HR zone. In June, I completed 294 km of distance Skiking three times per week and continue to be amazed at my energy level and my relatively few aches and pains as compared to my past as a runner. I am committed to the Maffetone Method, and to Skiking as my main form of recreational exercise and hope to continue both well into my retirement years which will begin in July 2016.
