This is a solid USB to serial adapter. Fair price for the quality, length and sturdiness. Uses common prolific chipset which Windows should install automatically. Overall connectivity is good, useful for a variety of tasks from console access to networking equipment to downloading data from PAT testers. Not sure on total speed however serial is limited to 900kbps.

We purchased a few of these units over time and use them daily to 'talk to' and program AMX and Crestron processors and other control system devices. Although the adapters are supplied with drivers discs, we found that Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 immediately downloaded the correct drivers and worked first time. Having two serial ports on modern laptops is invaluable and these now form part of our on-the-road systems. The supplied bracket also makes it easy to install in a more permanent location, such as our desks. Data 'speeds' range from 300 bps all the way to 921,600 bps, which is quite impressive. Granted, these adapters are more expensive than some, but we have not had any issues regarding communicating with any serial devices using these adapters (which frequently used to happen with cheaper USB to serial adapters). These adapters use the more reliable FTDI chip-sets. More details here: http://uk.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/Serial-Cards-Adapters/2-Port-Industrial-USB-Serial-RJ45-Adapter~ICUSB2322RJ
