Authentic shrimp paste
It's the original shrimp paste. It's supposed to smell very strong and bad but if used right adds a great depth of flavor to asian dishes. I use this in conjunction with many other asian sauces to make fried rice and other stir fried dishes. If you want to buy "shrimp paste", definitely go for this one.

No taste, no flavor just like paste of mud
Changed to 1 star after exploring / using this item. I don't see any big change in any item I used it with. This only adds salty taste, no enhancement of any taste. no enhancement on flavor of the item. It is like a paste made of black mud. So now I think this may be out dated item with lost smell, flavor and taste.

Product may have its uses. But the smell is an absolute deal-breaker for me.
When it arrived, even when sealed in two layers of plastic, upon opening just the box, I was hit with a waft of overpowering shrimp smell. The smell and the taste are very, very intense. Nevertheless, I decided to go ahead and use it. I used 2 teaspoons for a dish of about 1L of gravy. The paste absolutely overpowered and ruined the dish. I was left wondering if the shrimp paste had rotted due to improper storage, but later learned that this is how it's supposed to smell and taste. I'm sure the product has its uses. But the smell is absolutely irrepressible and overpowering. If you keep this in the fridge the whole fridge will stink of shrimp after a few days, even if the jar is kept in a zip-lock bag. I ended up throwing it out the very same day I received it. I have no problem with the seller. And there is strictly speaking nothing wrong with the product. I got what I ordered. Perhaps it's my fault for misusing it. But I just can't live with that smell. Nor do I ever want to eat it again.
