Easy to use
This cable worked great! I am not tech savvy, but I had no problem at all following the easy directions. It took about 5 minutes to download the software, hook the 2 computers together, and hit run... It ran for about 45 minutes and the job was complete. The great thing is, I can use it again if I buy another computer. I hope in the future the software programs will transfer as well, but all pictures, songs, folders transferred quickly and easily.

all were instructed to stick to using USMT for transferring user data instead of cables like this one
Working in IT as a Level 2 support tech at a global enterprise corporation, data transfer is probably the 2nd most commonly performed task. Just from experience of working in IT on a team of 5-7 techs, it's very critical to get the job done right the first time and to get the job done correct. Most of the migration techs that were contracted for a few months to migrate computers in the evening from XP\Vista to Windows 7, all were instructed to stick to using USMT for transferring user data instead of cables like this one. After the mess that utility has created and the migration "rent-a-tech" guys have left, my whole team has been playing cleanup by performing the data transfer manually. As easy as it sounds, it becomes quiet the tedious chore when it has to be done on hundreds of different user laptops and even more so when they're encrypted with WinTragic's SecureFlop. I ended up writing a VBScript that I put into an HTA application with a few selection options that must be selected according to the job at hand in terms of stating which OS to which OS is the data being transferred. That solution worked excellently in many situations but at random times also failed to work at all. Which brings me to stressing the enormous level of importance this cable has proved to be. I have made myself a mental note to pay attention where I put this cable at the end of the day and immediately put the cable back into my carrying pouch I keep it in after completing the data transfer. After a few times I've used this cable, it became apparent to me that the software that it comes with is completely useless. It requires installation on both of the computers that the data is being transferred between and you have to enter the registration key into the software each time you install it. Not a big deal as you can install it many times using the provided key when transferring from any PC to any PC. But in my case, I can't leave it installed after I'm done and have to uninstall it after completing the transfer. That becomes a PITA if you have to do it multiple times everyday. But the reason I found it to be useless was because it doesn't allow you to access certain folders that it hides in it's interface like Outlook folders where PST files are located as well as the other location where NK2 file resides. So the way I found this cable to be the most effective tool of my trade was simply by plugging it into the new laptop(running Win7), the Windows Easy Transfer utility pops up immediately which will recognize right away that you're using a transfer cable so the next question is Which PC is this? Choose This is my New PC, then it will ask you if you have the utility set up on your old PC and in the answer choices, select the one all the way on the bottom of the list which says My old PC is running Windows 7. Plug the other side into your old computer, same utility will popup so on the first screen hit Next, the next screen select This is My Old PC, click Next and it will scan the old PC quickly which takes at most a couple of minutes if many people have logged into that PC. But this utility gives you the fine grained control of selecting exactly what you want to transfer, which user profiles you want to transfer if you're logged in as an Admin and need to transfer a user's profile with data of a user that's never logged into the new computer yet. Using this cable I was able to completely transfer my supervisor's manager's complete profile, data, mapped printers, favorites and just about everything else useful. She left the old PC with me while still being logged into it, not wanting to reset her password just to set up the new PC without asking since I had no way to contact her, I was able to use this cable to transfer everything to the new PC exactly as she had it on her old PC. The big sigh of relief was when she came back and went to log into her account on the new PC, it immediately logged her in to her account with her exact desktop as it was on her old PC. I highly recommend this cable if you do data transfers a lot on a day to day basis. Plugable Technologies is a solid manufacturer that makes some of the best quality adapters I've ever bought for computers. Never had any issues with the quality of their products so I don't know how good their customer support is to say much about it other than I can imagine it should be as excellent as the quality of their products that have been the most reliable tools I've grown dependent on to get my job done over the last few years.

Easy transfer of files from computer to computer
I had an old computer with a dying hard drive. I bought a new Dell Optiplex 3000 (which is great) I wanted to transfer my old files to the new computer as quickly, easily, & economically as possible. This cable, and the related software, made the process very easy. It's transferred all my files & photos quickly, with just a few clicks. I was not able to transfer my browser favorites & passwords, which required some more work. I'm not sure if I missed something that would make that possible. That would be my only complaint

HARD TO USE AND NOT RELIABLE
Difficult to get started with this product. Instead of including everything in the package - you have to go to a website and download the software to it, which is no intuitive. The link is buried in a product brochure page with various options. This is especially a problem if your "old' computer is having issues and takes a long time to boot up. I finally got the two computers connected and followed the installation (which has to be done on BOTH computers separately), and 2 minutes into this ordeal, the computers lost contact with each other. No cable were moved, nothing was touched. I found this very frustrating, seeing that I chose a product that would be connected by cable one to the other, not by wifi, so there wouldn't be any connections issues. Going back with rebooting both computers, reinstalling the software, the computers never again connected. Going to the "help" page of the product website is not helpful at all. I even tried using ChatGPT to talk me through possible fixes, and some of these included updating firmware and long lists of "fixes" to try. This product is just too time consuming, and especially maddening when you have the "old" computer having problems, which is why you got a new one in the first place. I'm past my date to return the product, so now I'm stuck with it. Ack.

Bad software, great cable.
Three stars due to the cable being excellent. The software did not work. I bought a different brand of transfer software and used this cable and it was fine. The transfer took 8 hours, but it did a good job of getting settings right. Transferred over 300 GB.

Thunderbolt excellent at transferring files
Had a couple of glitches with the Thunderbolt cable, but Plugable's customer support resolved them quickly. The cable was EASY to use and FAST at transferring all files from my old laptop to my new AOI. Great product and I would definitely recommend it to others.

Easy to use on Linux - just enable the plusb driver, if not already enabled in the kernel. Just plug it in, and you'll get a network device on each end of the cable you can configure and run IP over. Amended review - performance between Intel i3-8100 CPU @ 3.60GHz and i7-5557U CPU @ 3.10GHz came in at 155MB/s or 1240 Gbps, about 30% faster than Gig Ethernet.

This was my 3rd purchase of transfer cables--and absolutely the best! My first set used USB 1.1 so was interminably slow. The second set from Dell used USB 2.0, so it was faster, but a dreadful user interface. This set from Plugable is USB 3.0 and the transfer speed is fast. (speed tests below) This is important. If all we do is transfer a small file or two it's much faster to use our home network. So, the cables will be used only when we have large, or many, files to transfer. This is where Plugable 3.0 cables pay for themselves. The Plugable Company is excellent. Amazon provides the cables -- with a mini-CD; although most of us will download the software ensuring we have the latest. Plugable sends the software key to your Amazon registered email. It arrived earlier than the cables (2-day express). I sent an email to Plugable. They used auto-reply to acknowledge my mail--but FOUR MINUTES later I received a full response from Plugable. They deal with my issue and added further information which they thought might be helpful to me. FOUR FLEXIBLE OPTIONS 1. DRAG AND DROP This allows you to drag any file from one computer to any destination in the attached computer; unlike a network transfer that limits you to shared folders. I experimented with a folder containing 6 gb video files: From one folder to another on the same computer: 2:45 mins (a fast gaming Asus notebook) From one folder to another on a different computer using a fast (AC3200) network: 6:38 mins. From one folder to another on a different computer using Plugable cables: 4:01 mins. This gave a speed increase of over 65%, with the added benefit of transferring to any folder on the second computer. (Not restricted to a shared folder, which would then require another 2 or 3 minutes to transfer it to its final destination.) 2. SYNC FILES This can be a superb time saver. Say you have 100 books/magazines/comics on computer one, and they are backed up on computer two. You purchase another six or seven books on computer one and want to update the second computer. Simply use the SYNC FILES option, and point to the appropriate directories and Plugable quickly transfers only the new files. 3. TRANSFER DATA TO ANOTHER COMPUTER I prefer to use the two options above, but for those who might not know which files to transfer from an old computer to a new one, this should be a most useful tool. 4. CONTROL OTHER COMPUTER A nice utility that works well, but I can't see any use for it. Why control a second computer while working on the first if the second one is less than three feet away? This is useful when you need to control a remote computer which is miles away; over the internet--but I got the feeling that what we have here is a cure for which there is no disease. Nevertheless, experience suggests that there are probably many people who find this invaluable and use it all the time. Go figure! There is a misleading comment on their packaging, "Does not transfer programs, or executables (protects from malware)". I suspect this is a built-in safeguard when using the Transfer Data option. I was able to easily transfer a folder which had the executable and the uninstall file without any problem. Forgive me if this was long-winded, but for those who are seriously considering this product I hope that the information above will help you decide. IMHO definitely a 5-star product, and a bargain at the price for those who will use it.
