Pathfinder Beginner Box (P2) Review: So Much Better Than the D&D Starter Sets - For anyone who doesn't know, Pathfinder is a competitor to D&D. They are similar in that they are both Fantasy Role Playing Games. In both, you have one or more players taking on the role of heroes exploring a fantasy world managed (and sometimes created) by a Game Master (a Dungeon Master, in D&D terms.) The difference here is in the quality. Pathfinder Second Edition is so thoughtfully designed and balanced that it sidesteps many of the problems in D&D at higher levels. The classes all stay relevant, and all players feel like they can meaningfully contribute to every adventure and encounter. There is also more to do in each player's turn, thanks to Pathfinder's three-action economy. Another big difference between the two systems is that while D&D is a property owned by a big corporation (Hasbro) and is optimized for profit, Pathfinder is created by a small company (Paizo) full of people who are passionate about the hobby. This is evident in the quality of the support material they publish, including a series of full campaigns they call Adventure Paths. These APs are usually considered the gold standard for published campaigns, equal to or better than any D&D campaign, and of far better quality if you take them all as a whole. Focusing on this particular product, there is no comparison between the PF2E Beginner Box and any of the D&D starter sets. This is the way to introduce a game. There are two books inside, one for players and one for the Game Master. They contain everything you need to run a Pathfinder Campaign that lasts from 1st to 3rd level for any of the four basic classes: Fighter, Wizard, Cleric, and Rogue. The GM book includes a simple dungeon that should last a couple of sessions and is designed to teach a group how to play. It then goes on to cover how a GM should create their own adventures and how they can design encounters of varying degrees of danger. There is also a set of dice included in the box, as well as a selection of cardboard lawns that you can use with the included map in place of miniatures. The value here is very high and shows Paizos commitment to customers as opposed to Hasbro's commitment to maximizing profit. Let's talk about that last point because it's important, and it's where Pathfinder shines. The system is so well designed that, unlike in D&D, the challenge system works. You can use the level of monsters to determine the type of encounter that will challenge a group at a given level, and there are guidelines to make these encounters easy to build. That is a gift to gamemasters. To sum up: if you are interested in learning a fantasy role-playing system and are open to choosing something other than D&D, Pathfinder is a very strong option. It does everything D&D does, only better. Review: Ring Side Report- RPG review of The Pathfinder Beginner Box - Originally posted by Throat Punch Games, a new idea every day! Product- The Pathfinder Beginner Box System- Pathfinder 2nd Ed Producer- Paizo Price- $29.99 TL; DR- Probably my favorite beginner box. 100% Basics- Let’s learn Pathfinder! This is the Pathfinder 2nd Ed Beginner Box. It’s got a double sided map and two level adventure. It’s got an introduction to character building, character sheets, AND pregens. It’s got dice. It’s full of standees and cardboard characters. It’s got it all! Mechanics or Crunch- If you want the full Pathfinder experience, this is it. You get four pregens, rules on how to play, and even a multilevel dungeon. Now, the dungeon and the fights are nothing crazy complex, and you might even say they're a bit easy, but as a new player, this will be fun. And as a new GM, this is a blast as well! You get the basics of Pathfinder 2nd Ed with real rules, so you don't learn a system that doesn't exist. You can also learn character building! This is a great intro on how to play. 5/5 Theme or Fluff- I don’t expect a ton of crazy things from beginner boxes, but I honestly got a solid intro to the world and a great adventure. You get a basic introduction to the world. It can’t be an epic tale of the world's creation and current state, but you get a good, solid idea of the basics of the world’s story. You also get an interesting adventure where you can play and get a few sneak peeks into future adventures. It’s just a great way to invite both players and GMs to the world of Pathfinder. 5/5 Execution- I’ve gushed about this box so far, and this won't be an exception. You get great dice, great books, great standees, EXTRA standees, solid pregens, and amazing books that help the players know how to play, and the GM run an an adventure on the fly. This is what I want as a player and a GM. 5/5 Summary- I’ve loved Pathfinder for a long time and played Pathfinder 2nd Ed since it came out. I also love Starfinder, but you can see there is more love for Pathfinder 2nd Ed from this box. Two levels of adventure, character generation guides for a few levels, dice, and standees make a great product. Also, that the rules in this box set are the same as the real game, makes me amazingingly happy. This is the kind of thing I will give to anyone who wants to learn Pathfinder. This is the 2e Remaster version
First, despite the image on the sale page, this is the 2e Remaster version incorporating the latest rules updates from Paizo. As for the package itself, it is one of the best tabletop roleplaying starter packages available. You get a rules booklet, a great low-level starter adventure that can lead right into another good scenario (Troubles in Otari) and a full campaign Adventure Path (Abomination Vaults), a set of dice, a bunch of character and monster standee minis, a set of maps, reference cards, some pregenerated characters, and some blank character sheets. It's packed with goodies to help new players and gamemasters learn the system and have a good time, but the included adventure is good enough for vets to play too. The only teeny negative is that it's quite expensive compared to other games' starter sets which usually retail for around $25. At an MSRP of $40, the Beginner Box can be a bit much for someone that doesn't even know if they'd like it since it costs about as much as just buying the hardback Player Core book! That said, the contents are worth the price. so it's not enough of a negative to cost it any points.

Great resource for getting new players into the game. Pre-made iconic characters help new players to see what normal looks like with a Pathfinder character. The GM guide also spells it out nicely for new players (or even old players) who want to try GMing for the first time. Maps and tokens included for all the areas of the adventure presented in the box. Also includes handy cheat sheets for actions.

As a person who has recently moved from DnD 5th edition I find Pathfinder to have less ambiguity in its rule set which I enjoy very much being a game master.
