Design for How People Learn (Voices That Matter) Review: Practical Insights That Changed How I Design Learning Experiences - Design for How People Learn has been an extremely helpful resource for understanding how people actually learn — not just in theory, but in practice. I frequently teach adults and regularly need to present new content in each session. This book helped reshape the way I think about designing learning experiences, not just delivering information. It challenged me to consider attention, memory, motivation, and engagement as part of the learning process, rather than assuming that good content alone is enough. What I appreciated most is how practical the ideas are. The concepts are clear, accessible, and immediately applicable. After reading this book, I found myself intentionally adjusting how I structure sessions, pace content, and reinforce key ideas — and the result has been more engaging sessions and learning that actually sticks. If you teach, train, facilitate workshops, or design educational content in any setting, this book is well worth your time. It’s a strong blend of research-based insight and real-world application. Review: A must for technical trainers - Julie makes it very clear in her book that we must focus on the learner so they can improve their performance.

Entertaining & Informative
This book is filled with great content that obviously comes from years of professional practice. Dirksen covers a lot of practical information in a fun way that doesn't feel too overwhelming (for novices) or too simplified (for more advanced practitioners).

A fantastic book for new and experienced learning professionals!
I think this might be the best book I've ever read that is related to the learning and development industry. Julie deconstructs complex concepts and ideas in relatable and easily understandable ways. I recommend this work for all my clients developing their L&D or Training Depts. It's easy to read and reference and has a wealth of information derived from more recent research. I find the lack of "clinical" or "academic" language refreshing and even enjoyable.

Really good book!
Even though I have a degree in psychology I learned something on just about every page. The way it is written makes it interesting, lots of graphics and examples. Some books on this topic are too academic and boring, but not this one. It is written in a way that the author is putting into practice what she teaches. It is engaging. I read it all the way through. I plan on using the knowledge gained this book in my own courses to help learners be fully engaged in the content. Def worth the read.

This is one of my favorite books in the field of training and learning design. A visual guide with easy to understand writing makes it one of the simplest and effective books on Instructional Design. The book is filled with practical tips that you can apply immediately in your corporate training.

Excellent book. Easy to read and relatable with fun examples and a clear narrative. My current L&D Bible, though I am now reading 'Talk to the Elephant' so that may change;)
