Nisargadatta's philosophy of non-believing
The quotation taken at random from The Ultimate Medicine seems to summarize Nisargadatta Maharaj: "I have no faith in any religion, including Hinduism". Everything is called into question. No concept, no name, not even your own, given to you by your parents, has ultimate validity. Nothing should make you feel secure. Nothing whatsoever has any claim on you. He is more than uncompromising; he is devastating in his frontal attack on the constant images which circulate in your mind which determine who you are - to the world and to yourself. I give The Ultimate Medicine 4 stars not 5 - not to underrate what Nisargadatta is saying; but because it may be impossible, except for the extremely few, to realize that other state of mind he speaks about. Yet it is a remarkable document, like all of his recorded talks.

I have earlier read I AM THAT from Nisargadatta Maharaj. Then I came to knoe about this book as it appeared in my recommendations. I have started reading this and just finished with first chapter. Just Wow. I felt the earlier peripheral concepts are getting shattered to their core, there's nothing more that comes as close as the truth to be told. The discourses within this book are larger and more deep than that of I AM THAT. I think these are more clear, in depth and concise as these are prepared from the rare recordings from the last days of Nisargadatta Maharaj and contains more wisdom. Worth the read.

This the final work, the last words, of the great non-dual master. I AM THAT was the first I read, and then others. I love the way he taught. Ramana taught via silence, Nisargadatta by engagement. So many came to him to tell him what they knew. He let them talk and talk, even argue with him sometime... continually engage telling us we are not what we think we are, whatever it is, over and over...find out....find out.... not this, not that.. what's left?

This book is a collection of some of the later question and answer sessions between Sri Nisargadatta and visitors from around the world. After finishing `I Am That' I read this book. There is a noticeable difference between the words of Nisargadatta in the two books. `I Am That' is unquestionably the better of the books, and the pinnacle of Maharaj's teachings. During His earlier days, Maharaj was eager to teach, and would continually answer beginners questions. In this book, which collects talks during which He was ill and close to death (the body's death), he stated that he no longer desired to teach, and was a little intolerant of beginners unfamiliar with the basics of his teachings. So this book deals with some of Nisargadatta's more advanced teachings. Maharaj in this book talks about the necessity of understanding your own incarnation, and what you were before the body was born. He talks about the interdependence of the vital breath and consciousness, stating that both consciousness and the sense of `I-Am-Ness' are dependent on the body. This book gave me a better understanding of the principle method taught by Sri Nisargadatta, which is holding onto the sense of `I Am.' He taught that this method will lead to the realization that you are not the body, but consciousness. However, He also said that this isn't the Ultimate, and that even the association with consciousness has to be given up eventually. If I understand correctly, realizing that you are consciousness is Brahman, and when this is realized you become the totality of manifestation. But the Ultimate, Parabrahman, is the witness of the Brahman and the full and final enlightenment. All of this is elucidated in `The Ultimate Medicine.' So, while not the monumental work that `I Am That' is, this book is still very worth reading, especially if you want to go deeper, and read some of the more advanced teachings by this great Master, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.
