The other reviewers have extolled the engineering strengths of this book so I won't go over old ground yet again. The book has exceeded my expectations in virtually all respects. It is an absolute bedrock foundation in ICEs. It will help you to answer questions you already had about ICEs and it will increase your ICE awareness on a quantum level so as to cause you to ask questions you never had before. I can't say enough good things about this book. I am saddened by the fact the author has already passed away and from a purely selfish perspective will not be able to continue to contribute to the knowledge base he has so generously left us as a part of his legacy. This is a must have book in your library!

The book was used, but it turns out it was in almost perfect condition. Very satisfied and would buy again.

This book contains a lot of good material and supporting references. The book is from the 70's 80's but the information is still relevant.

This is an excellent book - and one of the clasics on the subject of IC Engine Engineering. It's a good anchor for the student new to the subject - as most of the basic theory can't really change. Having said that, it doesn't go far enough with practical simulation methods, which have become much easier to apply as computers have matured. And there is - as always in typical engineering texts - not much to use in terms of practical design. But then - such a book would be much longer. And - because engine control capability has improved so much in the last 15 years, as has knowledge of pollutant formation and control - this book simply does not have much of use (other than as an introuction) to those areas. That's why I gave it 4 stars, not 5. Still a good read for the engineer.

Needed to understand IC engine

I have volume one also. The two volume set gives qualitative advice and quantitative information that feels like you have a mentor guiding you. If you are involved the repair, design, selection, or operation of internal combustion engines these are best volumes I have ever come across.

The book exceeded my expectations. It was in excellent condition, better than described in the description of condition. An excellent service, delivered before I expected.

Good resource for engine design fundamentals

I have not had time to read the whole book but, just now, I have scanned it (it is Volume II covering: Combustion, Fuels, Materials and Design - 1968) and I have read quite big portions. I would say I am fairly knowledgeable re. engines, but I learnt several new things even from this brief reading session. The book is written in a very clear, easy to read style. It has many clear photos, diagrams and graphs, and is not heavily mathematical. It is written by a man who had very many decades of practical and theoretical experience with engines. Volume II together with Volume I (which I have not read) must rank among the most definitive books on engines. Despite having been published in 1968, most of the content is still relevant and even still current. I will eventually read all of the petrol engine content of the book (it covers diesel engines as well), and the book is also an excellent reference document.
