Oi Cat! (Oi Frog and Friends)

My grandkids love these books! I took a trip to Australia in 2023 (hello, Women’s World Cup!) and, as is my habit, I bought a few books as souvenirs. Oi Aardvark was one of them. My grandkids live 1,000 miles away from me so we FaceTime often and I read to them via video. They loved that first Oi book so much, I started buying others. My youngest grandchild, age 5, only wants me to read these books and has lost interest in all other books that I own. It was her birthday so I finally bought her Oi books for her own home: this book and Oi Dinosaurs. They were an absolute hit!

We have the collection (Oi Cat, Oi Dog, Oi Frog, and even the one for world book day Oi Goat) and my son loves them. "What do elephants sit on?" "Smelly pants!"

its OK, first one is better

This is the 3rd book in a great series, but the whole book doesn’t make sense if you don’t know that “mog” is another word for “cat.” So prep your kid in advance!

PRO: great illustrations CONS: 1. The entire punchline and the last SEVEN pages of the book require the child to know that mog is apparently a slang for cat. 2. Numerous rhymes don’t work in American English, for example, troll & doll, alpaca & cream cracker. 3. Poor grammar, for example, “If I was a...” 4. Kids found it boring and long- probably because of the failed rhymes and the unfamiliar slang; maybe would be better for a British English speaker.

I bought this for my granddaughter and she loved it so much that she now has the entire series of Oi books. Illustrations are fun and stories provide a lot of giggles and encourage fun reading time.

It’s a funny book! My kids enjoyed it. Oi Frog is still their favorite though

The books in this series (starting with Oi! Frog!) are great fun for your kids and are perfect when they have just figured out reading, because they can read them on their own and enjoy them in all their quirkiness.
