Basic C6th Nonpedal Lap Steel Method Review: Well written and comprehensive - Quite detailed and comprehensive, a great source if one is aiming for a self-paced training in the instrument. Review: For Beginners - This is definitely THE book to get for beginning lap steel players. I got 3 different instruction books, and this one is my favorite and most instructional by far. Keep in mind, that the book teaches you how to play six string lap steel guitar in the C6 configuration; meaning that when all strings are strummed, it makes a C6 chord. You can find LOTS of music written for the C6 configuration.

Some Nice Arrangements
There are some neat arrangements of some traditional tunes in here an what appear to be some good licks and harmonized scales too. I particularly like the approachable arrangements of Wildwood Flower and Amazing Grace. This book has been helpful, especially since it has been difficult to find resources on C 6th tuning but I wouldn't recommend without some prior knowledge of music. Also the sequence of this book is kind of baffleing. The exercises are non-linear and appear to be in a random order, It would make a lot more sense to order them by difficulty or emphasizing each particular technique as it is learned. At one point slants are introduced (after the basic technical kind of instruction is long past) with a note to look up them up on a random page late in the book. The CD is really helpful to get a grasp on accents and timing, especially with faster passages but only covers the songs. Those tasty riffs aren't on the CD so you kind of have to try and pick them out from where they're thrown into the traditionals. All that being said there are still a lot of good gems scattered throughout, but the presentation makes them a bit difficult to find.

Great instruction Book for Beginning Lap Steel
I am just a beginner on my Lap Steel and this book is wonderful - I've purchased several other training tutorials off the internet and purchased a few other beginner books, but DeWitt Scott takes you step by step thru the process of learning the proper techniques. He shows you the correct way to hold your right hand, special techniques you need to practice over and over. And with the accompanying cd, he leads you as you play along at a slow speed to gain confidence. I play piano, and have played multiple instruments in high school, can read music, but the lap steel is a different beast. Rich in chord theory, of which I lack. This by far, is the best instruction book I have come upon.

Okay for country
This book is good if you really want to play in C6th tuning. I thought I did, but I found it rather limiting and too old time country sounding. I prefer G tuning. There is some information about forming minor chords, but if you are looking for boxes or fretboard diagrams of minor chords, you are out of luck. Minor chords are presented in music terms, with an example of Dm in the tab, and the instruction to flat the 3rd to form other minor chords. I believe there are many people out there who know that you flat the third. It would be nice to have a diagram that shows you the basic locations instead of having to figure out where the third of a chord is located on the fretboard. After all, the minor chord formations form a pattern on the fretboard.

Great for an ADVANCED beginner!
Great great book and method. One caveat: it’s best if you already play guitar. I’m a trained and experienced guitarist who lost the dexterity of my left hand due to nerve damage. I can still hold a slide tho ‘. I already knew the picking (“grabs”), knew the fret positions and could already read tab. Without this knowledge this book might be overwhelming for a beginner. Buy a basic beginner book, first — then by all means buy THIS EXCELLENT book when you’ve got some skills with the basics.

Not that useful for a lap steel beginner...
I don't understand the rave reviews for this book. If it's really the best intro book out there for learning to play C6th lap steel guitar, that can only be the case if it's because there are no good books for the beginning C6th lap steel player, so the competition for 'best' is not very stiff. It does hardly any 'teaching', presenting just the barest of introductions to standard musical notation (that anyone who took one piano lesson as a child already knows), along with a guide to reading tabs with almost no explanation. The book was a total disappointment. Don't waste your time or your money - it's much better to simply watch some free intro videos on the net.

Backup cd is great for beat and melody
I was never a music person, however this book and cd allows me to progress. First ten songs are notes only. Song #1 one string only. It cannot get any more simple. Backup cd is great for beat and melody. Don't take it wrong. You still have to pay your dues, and practice. I will forget other materials and what is on line until I master this book.

very good book for the beginner who has no musical knowledge at all, it teaches you how to read music, at the same time as actually playing the lap steel. so you are using the lap steel from the beginning of the book, covers every thing you will need to become an accomplished player
