The Philips Boombox is a CHARM!
I just received the Philips Boombox a few days ago, and I am VERY PLEASED that I took a chance with it when there were so very few reviews. I was almost going to get the Panasonic Boombox because Panasonic is such a fantastic brand, but then the model that they offer here on Amazon doesn’t have the Bluetooth/streaming feature so that’s why I decided to risk it. PROS: 1) First of all, I was really HOPING that the remote would have an ON/OFF switch—you’d be surprised at what systems DO NOT! It makes it so much easier as you’re just about to sleep to just press the OFF button, than walk over to the other side of the room! The rest of the remote is pretty good, too—simple, functional, although I haven’t programmed any radio stations yet. 2) The sound is great for such a small unit! In my opinion, the sound is very HIGH QUALITY for what you pay. Gets louder than even some traditional everything-in-one sound systems, which I was initially going for before I came to the conclusion that I would “piece together” my sound system with a portable stereo and a Bluetooth record player. 3) Everything works great, the radio picks up most of the stations that I’m interested in (it only has FM stations); I LOVE the Bluetooth function—it is easy to operate and makes things SO FUN! The CD player works well, and even the tape player plays the sound crisply. 4) This unit IS PORTABLE, you just need batteries, if you take it outdoors. 5) The stereo also has an “automatic shut-down” feature that shuts the stereo off after it is left idling for some time. CONS: 1) The CD player loads from the top, so you have to “snap” the CD in place. You just have to be careful to do that with care each time. 2) Although I can pair my record player (Bluetooth) with the stereo, the sound only gets louder when I do this, but the sound quality isn’t there. It actually sounds better with the record player by itself. 3) The tape function is the only thing not on the remote—you have to do that manually (not a complaint), but you can’t record anything on this unit—there’s no record button. 4) The instructions given with this stereo aren’t the clearest. Some experimentation may happen, if you aren’t already familiar with how things work. FYI—I would also recommend purchasing the Asurion 3-year warranty insurance plan with this boombox, in case things go awry. If you maneuver around on your phone/computer, it will display that option in your cart at checkout, if it already does not. +

Great Bass and Volume
I was very hesitant about purchasing this boombox based on the reviews so I ended up purchasing several others because they had good reviews but to me those are for old people who don’t like noise, I may be up in my 50’s but I still have a lot of life to live and I like my music loud with some good bass and that’s what this player offers. I have an older version that I bought before my children were born but it’s not working good anymore, I’m Jamaican and I love to listen to reggae music with bass and so far give thanks and praise this box has been delivering, I haven’t been able to try the cassette player yet and I hope that when I do I won’t be disappointed, all I can say is this player has great volume and bass if both those components sucked then I wouldn’t have kept it, as for the bluetooth function I guess when I’m ready my kids can help me out with all that, if you’re like me and you’re not yet ready to sit back and just grow old then give this player a try you might actually like it, the thing I like about playing music with good bass is that it makes you want to get up and move and I believe that’s a good thing, I hope and pray that this player will serve me for a long time just like it’s ancestor did 😊.

Perfect For Apartment Living
If you are looking for a cd boombox stereo that is large, but not too large, and small but not too small for apartment living, then this one is probably for you. As I was browsing Amazon for a new cd boombox, I was looking for one with a well known brand name, and that would put out good sound. I can say that this one fits the bill, and it looks great, and sounds great. It doesn't seem to have hard heavy bass in it, but the sound is beautifully balanced. It just sounds good with a full sound of both bass and high tones. It also has some preset custom sounds that can effect the bass and high tone sounds. It can get loud enough that I can hear it throughout my 4 bedroom apartment without fearing too much that I will disturb the other surrounding tenants. The remote control featured on this product page is not the remote you get with this cd boombox, at least that is the case with my unit. The remote that came with my boombox is much better and controls all the functions you need it to. I'm not sure what the discrepancy is between the product page and the actual product, but I'm not disappointed. It's a great remote control that came with this unit. I bought this cd boombox specifically for playing my cd's because the cd player stopped working on my bigger stereo system, and another cd boombox I have just doesn't cut it for sound with me. I know that I will get a lot of enjoyment out of this product. This unit apparently can play mp3 files as well, however I haven't tried that at the time I'm writing this review on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, the same day this boobox was delivered to me. It has a usb port, and I will eventually put a usb flash drive in and see what happens. It's possible that this will play cd-rw/mp3 discs as well... which if I find out is the case, would be awesome. I do recommend this boombox.

Lousy item, but Amazon customer service was helpful.
First, Amazon's customer service was quite good, along with the extended warranty company from whom I bought insurance, whose "refund" was fast --- although I would have preferred that had been put back on my card rather than being sent e-credit via email, which can be used only at Amazon. (Feels a little like "I owe my soul to the company store", but I digress.) This Sound Machine by Philips was purchased to replace a similar boombox, same manufacturer, that worked well for 20 (yes, twenty!) years. This one lasted only one year. The sound was nowhere near as good, clear, or loud...There was no BASS BOOST button, or treble control, just 5 choices of types of sounds someone of little discernment might like their music or spoken word cds to sound "like." Those choices were not delineated, not to my ears and not to some friends' ears at all. I remember only four of the five: bright, warm, clear, balanced . . . So what?. Lyrics were hard to discern even when I knew the words. Cheaply done corner cutting by Philips made the experience feel precarious, and unlike the previous Philips, this Sound Machine hardly filled my small open layput space at all. Lousy volume and mediocre sound quality made me yearn for the time when companies gave a goodgoddamn. So, when the cd player started skipping, or not reading my cds at all, I knew where we were headed. Which beings me back to good customer service on the sellers' end, if not the inconsiderate and greedy manufacturer's . . . care? Quality control? Couldn't even get a human on the phone or by email at Philips.

Pros and Cons
This is a good product that could be so very much better. Pros: - Great sound - Longer antenna than I had, so I can get some stations I couldn't get before. - Digital tuner is great. I can zero in on the station number I want. - CD player is easy to use. Cons: - Instructions are absolutely worthless. They seem to believe that a picture is enough to explain things. It isn’t. Unless you're an electronic whiz, be prepared to learn by just starting to push buttons and see what happens. - Volume control - it would have been nice if there were intermediate volume levels. Ex... where I sit near my radio, 2 is too low, and 3 is too loud. 2 5 would probably be just right. - Presets... once you've used a preset, it appears to be permanent. By trying to learn how to do a preset, I preset a non-existent station. It would be nice to over ride it with a station I listen to. But, you can't. - Remote Contol ... At this time, I don't have a clue what to do with it. All the labels on it are for CDs. I'll start pushing buttons one of these days and see what happens. - Remote Control 2 - How do you make a remote control without a button to turn off the radio. Dumb. As I said, all in all, a good radio/CD player, but they could have made it so much better.
