Klein Tools VDV500-123 Wire Tracer Tracing Probe with LED Work Light for Ethernet, Internet, Telephone, Speaker, Coax, Video, and Data Cables RJ45, RJ11, RJ12

I already had the Klein Tools Scout Jr. 2 tester, and needed to track down some Ethernet cables (CAT6a). I’m new to this type of tool, so I first tested with my laptop’s flat Ethernet cable. I connected the tester to its test plug using the flat cable, and toned each wire inside it. The probe detected the tone of each wire 1 through 8 of the flat cable (left to right). Lo, Hi, and LoHi. I have a 8 PoE camera CCTV system with cables running inside conduit. The cable that I was tracking down had a 1,2,3, and 6 open failure. So this probe and the tester will allow me to tone and track down the bad cable and also where the failure occurred. This is a must have tool, even for the casual DIY like myself.

Great tester, for a lot less money then other brands. Make sure you get the matching case for it. Look like a pro, work like a pro.

I purchased the Klein Tools VDV500-123 Cable Tracer Probe Pro January 3, 2020 and it has worked very well so far. I have tested it with my Scout Pro 2 (VDV501-098) and my Scout Pro 2 LT (VDV501-108) both of which have a Tone Generator function, and it works with both of them. This Tracing Probe has a very solid feel to it and the "rubberish" sides keep it from slipping around in my hand (or slipping out of it). I removed 1 star because of the confusion created by Klein Tools description which strongly implies that this probe only works with the VDV500-063 which I thought I would have to buy just to use this probe. Luckily the description is wrong because I really don't need another Tone Generator. Since this is an "Analog" Tone Probe I'm pretty sure that it should work with most lower-end to middle-end Tone Generators.

Exactly as described and it works perfectly I needed it for a recent job and it did what it is meant to do and did it well.

I started out trying to trace ethernet cables with the VDV500-123 and the Klein Lan Scout Jr 2. This worked ok as long as you could touch the cable with the tip of the probe but didn't work through walls or even wall plates. I tested the output of the Lan Scout and it was only about 1.18V into a 10kohm resistor, or about -8.5dBm of power. The Klein VDV500-705 says it puts out +8.5dBm for toning, so I hooked an audio signal generator to my ethernet cable running at 1kHz and 7 volts, or about 7dBm. This let me detect a cable with the VDV500-123 out to around 6-12". It would go through walls with no problem. This let me trace my wires all over my house. The only problem I ran into was that wires that were bundled together for long distances would couple the tone signal from one into other ones. Once I found all of the points the wires ended at, I could still tell the difference between them though.

Purchase this one alongside with the Scout Pro 3. They work well with each other.

If you have any of the Klein scout range with the toning function, this is a must have. The probe is powered by a 9v battery and is secured in a screwed compartment on the back. There is a quite powerful light on the front of it that is ultra handy when searching for cables in the back of patch panels. This can be turned on independently from the toning function. The volume level is controlled by two buttons and the highest levels is quite high and also can have a pair of headphones attached using a 3.5mm jack. The outer casing is very rugged and durable and does look like it will withstand a lot of use in all different kinds of environments. Overall, a very handy and well priced probe to pair with the Klein scout range.
