First How Things Work Encyclopedia: A First Reference Guide for Inquisitive Minds Hardcover – December 28, 2009

My 7 year old is always asking questions about everything and I don't always know the answers to all his questions so I bought him several of the DK publishing kids encyclopedia books and he loves all of them! He will flip throught them and read about whatever happens to look interesting to him that day. He loves telling his dad and I about all the cool things he reads about in these books! He is still a bit young to understand everything in the books but with the pictures he is able to see the visuals for a lot of what he reads about and I'm sure as he gets older some of the things he doesn't understand now will make more sense. These books definitly inspire his love for learning and are a great resource to have in the house to answer some of those never ending questions!

I bought this for a nephew hoping for an in depth explanation of mechanical concepts and devices at a child's level of understanding. In my mind I was looking for a modern version "How Things Work", similar to the 1960 version authored by Roger Jean Segalat. This set of volumes was very important to me as a child, and I'm pretty sure they were the inspiration for my successful career as a mechanic/technician. This book is nothing like those books of my childhood. This more modern How Things Work Encyclopedia does not really go into any detail on how things work, but instead gives a more dumbed-down version for today's less mechanically savvy kids. There is a much greater focus on what things do than how things do the things they do. Sad really.

Great book for kids

GREAT BOOK FOR INQUIZATIVE MINDS ....Bought this book for my young Grandson who always wants to learn what make things TICK !He has spent hours reading these interesting stories.

I gave this to may son for this birthday- he loves science, and inventing, etc. He loves this book, and even his younger brothers enjoy it because of the great pictures in it. Some of the explanations go over his head, but most are explained so that he can understand how they work, it is great book, I think he will love it even more when he is a bit older.

I bought this for my 5 year old nephew and he is obsessed. If you have an eager to learn kid in your life, buy this book!

I've always loved DK books, but this one was purchased as a Christmas present for my 8-year-old nephew, who has great curiosity about "how things work". After he opened it, and went on to other gifts, his father and uncle and grandfather took it and ended up raving about it all during Christmas dinner.

Mein Sohn nimmt seit 2 Jahren diese Bücher immer wieder in die Hand und liest darin! Man kann diese Reihe wirklich allen Eltern nur wärmstens empfehlen! Es ist eine super Wissenschaftsreihe Kindgerecht aufbereitet!! TOP und man kann es jeden Eltern nur empfehlen!!

Good book. But not as I expected,very thin and so very less content.

Good book for upper grade students

Interesting and informative for kids!. It helps to uunderstand the functional aspects of many common objects.

Best book for children under age of 14
