I wish they had pencils like this when I was in school.
These are awesome pencils. I have several different types of pencils and I keep finding myself grabbing this one. If I have to find a gripe, it's that the coating on the pencil is slick, so if you sweat while writing, or you put lotion on your hands, it will make the pencil a bit slippery... Speaking of which, one word of warning, do not wipe your pencil down with rubbing alcohol to try and remove the lotion, this will remove the gold embossing on the pencil... But of course it leaves the annoying white barcode! I am left handed and this pencil does smudge for me a bit, but then again so do all pencils. There is no smell when this pencil is sharpened. I have sharpened the pencils using little wedge and blade sharpeners (I don't know what their proper name is) and a vintage 1960's wall mount sharpener that was used in classrooms back in the day, and both sharpen the pencil beautifully! I have also sharpened the pencil with a knife and that works as well. The lead is super strong. I have been using this pencil for cardboard craft projects because it lays down a nice dark line and doesn't smudge too much on cardboard, despite my leftyness. I wish they had pencils like this when I was in school. All we got were #2 Dixon or Tricondaroga's and they would always have a bit of grit in the lead so you would feel it grind away until the lead wore down and the grit fell out (or watever)... So far no grit with these and they write so smooth! I just wish there was a bare wood version.

Great pencils!
These pencils are great. The wood doesn’t splinter when sharpening them. The lead is buttery soft and lays down smooth lines on the paper that aren’t hard to erase if you use a light hand. They’re a great alternative to some other pencils, and well worth the price. Great pencils!

Tombow makes the best writing utensils on the planet
I've never given 2 thoughts to lead, but the lead in this pencil is Beautiful, there's no other way to describe it, it's nice and dark, but has a beautiful shine, the wood is malleable but durable

Great pencil.
These write smooth and sharpen nicely. Virtually no smudging either. The core is sturdy and able to hold a fine point for good looking text. Although I have no doubt the case is cedar, it is not a particularly aromatic cedar; which is probably the only fault I can find with this pencil.

Good dark pencil.
Good and dark strong pencil. Would be better if it had an eraser tip, too.

Pick your darkness
These pencils are 2B which is on the black and soft side of the pencil hardness/darkness scale. It’s about the softest, blackest pencil you can still easily use for normal writing. The pencil hardness scale: SOFTEST/BLACKEST 9B,8B,7B,6B,5B,4B,3B,2B B HB F H 2H,3H,4H,5H,6H,7H,8H,9H HARDEST/LIGHTEST If you went down to a 9B it would be a jet-black mushy grease pencil for artists. Like an eye pencil for lady’s (or clowns) makeup. There are options to select on this order “2B” or “B” or “HB”. If you want a dark, yet hard pencil then get the “HB”. If really like the 2B, but what I’m doing is sort of weird. I take scrap brown shipping paper (I work in a library and we get tons of books delivered and they’re packed with this stuff). A “normal” pencil barely is visible on this dark brown paper. So I use the 2B, which shows up great. I have to sharpen this pencil way more often than a normal pencil, but I use a pen(cil) pocket knife, which puts a much better point on it (for these weird purposes). This brown paper feels similar to a grocery bag, so it almost is like sandpapery and dulls any pencil faster. I got the idea from an old episode of Columbo, where he uses a woman’s eyeliner pencil to write a note. The box these come in is very nice looking too. Almost like an old cigar box design.

Most famous pencil in Japan for good reason
Tombow states that the 8900 is your basic HB pencil, available in 3 grades. This does not make complete sense to a literal reader. But I take it to mean, any of the 3 grades you select HB, B or 2B will deliver a standard, quality graphite (and has been delivering since 1913 at that!) This is a terrific pencil with archival packaging. No two which ways about it. Strong and centered core, great point retention, lightweight, the hexagonal barrel feels a bit uncomfortable after a while. It would not be my pencil were a writer. Round barrel only, thank you. If you are American and like a built in eraser, let me warn you against that hack now. It throws the whole pencil off balance. You either need to use a handheld eraser or check out the Tombow 2558 with ferrule and built-in eraser. Run don’t walk to add this pencil legend to your cart. you won’t be sorry.

My new favorite pencil
These are all-around great pencils. Easy to sharpen, hold a point decently well, feel great in hand, and they're relatively cheap compared to some other options. Definitely recommend these to anyone on the fence or looking for a great quality pencil.

Writes smoothly and darker than other 2B pencils. Excellent pencil for the money. Unlike some pencils that come pre-sharpened, these are unsharpened so the choice of point size is left to the user.
