Password Safe

Love this item! I do not have to store important passcodes on my computer, a it’s super easy to edit the passcodes. This is a must have, if you change your passwords frequently!

I actually had a password safe from another store and just recently purchased one from Amazon to have two of these units. I cannot vouch for how long the unit will last, but only that I actually tested everything on the unit and it does work as advertised. I took the battery out to see if the unit will lose its memory, but sure enough, it has flash memory and worked again after reinstalling the batteries. The unit has three important items you need. You can use the website or name of what you intend to file alphabetically by the unit. The second item is usually your user name and last of all a place to store your password. It also has a note section to store notes on that password you have stored. I also owned the password fast that is good for traveling and much harder to input than the password safe. To me, password safe is fun and easy to use. It is a very well thought out device.

I read many reviews and I found most of the criticisms to be a bit over done. This is a relatively small but sturdy item and I found using it to be quite simple especially when using a stylus which completely avoids the small keys, and closeness issue. Yes, the off/on switch is close to other keys and it can be accidently pushed, but after doing it one time - lesson learned. Be aware, the shift key does not capitalize, it only selects the red items embedded over some of the keys. The Caps lock key must be used for each single capitalization, again, once learned, quite simple. The device works very well for its intended purpose. The input is easy and straightforward. After selecting a password for entry the "action" bar offers choices for viewing, adding, deleting, or editing items. Once selected, input is accomplished by typing in the information (this is where the stylus comes in handy). There is also a "setting" option that provides some function choices. I like the fact that there is a beep each time a key is pushed, that helps the navigation, and I like that the screen can be illuminated. I added credit card numbers as well as website passwords, along with some other info. All in all this is a necessary and welcome device to the world of more and more passwords. Also, the same device is $10 more expensive in the Herrington catalog. This is a value and a no brainer.

It took a little getting used to because the "shift" key does not capitalize the letters, and only works on the "symbols". You have to turn the "caps lock" on & off to display the upper case letters. Once you get all your sites / IDs / PWs / Notes into the unit, it is GREAT. Just takes a little patience. And it also has a "backlight" to brighten the display...LOVE IT!!!! Also like that it is pw protected so it cannot be easily hacked-depending on the PW you use. It replaced the rolodex I used to use for all my passwords (349), because this holds 400. Addition to original review added 11/19/2014: After using this item for 4 months (and I loved it), I got a message stating "please replace the batteries". I replaced the batteries received with the unit, with brand new Duracell AAA batteries, and the unit did NOT work. I checked the new Duracell batteries with my battery tester (since I know sometimes you can get duds), and they were good. I cannot retrieve my passwords. I tried to contact "Modern Everyday" (the retail company that sells this item through Amazon @ 888-980-9963), and could not speak to any one. I left a message, and am still waiting for a call back.

It's ok, I will still keep my hard copy. The function keys can be very difficult to see and to use. You have to get used to different ways to use the shift and capitol function. I have no idea how it works when looking for something The read out could be much better, difficult to distinguish a u from a w for example. Don't know how long the battery will last. I'm using a 4 dot for the dot because that is the closest I can find. There could be improvements. I like that it is offline and has a password to get in. So bottom line, it's tedious to enter a lot of info. Not sure whether to recommend it or not.

Bought Password Safe 090419, delivered 090719. It measures 4-7/8" (12cm) by 3-1/2" (9 cm) wide & about 1" thick (it tapers to 3/8"). Cons: no comma, semi-colon, lower case x looks like H, & I couldn't get the - to work. Pros: Easy to handle & make entries, backlight really helps in a darkened room. Eval: I entered 5 URLs with passwords (recorded elsewhere) and edited each in turn. After entering a new password I turned the device off, then on again. None of the other URLs or passwords were erased or altered in any way (previous complaint). You can enter passwords of 20 to 22 characters (it varies), depending on which characters are used. Since my passwords are longer I often wrote "see below" in the password area and entered the password in the Notes area. I also made comments like "entry #3 is a small X, not an H", or "character = is a dash -" , or " : is a comma"., etc. Screen entries are much easier to read than entries made on the Royal Password Vault, which I evaluate elsewhere. I would have evaluated other competitors, but no one sent me one. Summary: This is a useful, easy to use device for recording spur-of-the-moment passwords. It may also keep you from logging in to untrustworthy networks while traveling. Stars were reduced because the comma, semi-colonand dash were omitted. I have been using the Password Safe for over 10 years. It is fantastic. Pros As there is no connectivity to this device, there is no easy way to hack into it. This is little risk of losing data due to power failure as the device has two-battery system using 3 AAA batteries and a replaceable Lithium battery. It is durable as my original for personal passwords has been working for over 10 years. Cons Searching for records is very case sensitive. Because it has no ports, you cannot back the data up to another system. My solution was to buy another Password Safe so I had a backup of my passwords. I recently purchased a new Password Safe as a gift to my niece as she mentioned her password were compromised when her online password app was hacked. If you want peace of mind on your security, I would recommend you get the Password Safe.
