This is interesting concept that has too many limitations. Advertising claims that you can get this set up in minutes.. lol. Not really! If you are not an experienced Linux software engineer, then forget about it. Don't even start. Even if you are a Linux dev, then you'd eventually realize that you could've built something much better than this on your own.I'm using this with the following setup:- Raspberry Pi 4B/8GB - with latest Raspbian installed.- RetroPie installed on top with a script. That part was easy.- Then I had many-many hours of struggle with mk_arcade_joystick_rpi driver, which on official Waveshare GitHub hasn't received any updates in the last 2+ years. It turned out that I had other incompatible driver conflicting with the HAT, on the same two GPIO pins as this hat. This caused me many further troubleshooting hours - Why my controller is not working? Why it keeps triggering random button presses non stop?.... You will have to figure out how to build and install the driver, then how to configure it - to map the proper GPIO pins. Default setup in RetroPie and Recalbox does not officially support this Game HAT. So you will have to use nanoedit or mcedit to manually adjust the configs...As you are tinkering with this, you'd surely need at least RealVNC connection or, ideally, SSH2 connection to the board. I had to recover my RPi back from dead using SSH2. As I couldn't make the joystick work with RetroPie. It's interesting situation, where EmulationStation is up, asking you to configure things, but you can't get anywhere beyond the main screen. Screen resolution is horrible, and you can't really edit much. The only way to recover is to use SSH2.Finally, I got it set up, up and running. It took many-many hours to compile and install the emulators from source... Phew!Pros:- speakers are nice, loud.- physical installation is easy per se..... until you get to software installation.Cons:- buttons are mushy, not great. You end up having only 4 D-Pad keys, which instructions suggest you to use the analog joystick for that. And 4 buttons A X Y B.. At this point you'd probably think that it's much-much cheaper to get a usual BlueTooth controller connected to RPi. Even something like MS Xbox One bluetooth controller or PS4 bluetooth controller would be better.- screen is not great. The resolution is only 480x320, which is NOT enough to emulate things like Wii or Gamecube; no touchscreen.- You'd 100% need to plug a wireless keyboard and mouse anyways, and I ended up having some emulated games working fine with keyboard... Then what's the point of the buttons and joystick on this controller? Won't it be actually cheaper to find a smaller HDMI display for the same amount, then use your keyboard keys?I will not be returning it back. My son got this as a Christmas Gift from Santa. But I am questioning if Santa actually did the right call while ordering this.If you want a really good emulator - with nice IPS screen and better resolution, then you can most likely find it for LESS than the cost of this HAT + RPi elsewhere. Like, a prebuilt cheap consoles that run Linux. There are several alternatives. Your overall experience with these would be much more smooth.Overall I think this kit does not offer good enough value: not enough buttons; hard to configure; poor LCD screen quality.. Lots of software configuration hassles. It's just not worth it at all.

Your Pi will not recognize the game HAT. You will need to either need to manually write the driver or go through the install from the site.

This thing looks awesome, its pretty easy to set up the pi and assembly is simple. The screen is sharp and bright. The brightness seems to be fixed as the menu setting makes no difference and I wish it had a volume dial because navigating a menu each time to make adjustnents gets old.This is a great product overall.
